it's a hp deskjet 3050 and simple-scan didn't recognize it when i installed it.
when i ran simple-scan it activated my laptop's camera? confused? ok
so i figured i'd go into synaptic and remove simple-scan and the reinstall it, right? reinstalling proved no help. all the hp software is installed too... not recognizing my scanner. never had this problem with simple-scan before.

yes my deskjet has a flat bed scanner on top. And i've used it before with other distros.

I'm not sure how to help on this, but you could try if disabling your laptop camera will help. You should be able to do so with:
Code: Select all
sudo modprobe -r uvcvideo

It was worht a try; at least confirming the webcam isn't interfering or blocking the scanner somehow. After a reboot your webcam will be back, or run:
Do you have the package hplip installed? That might be needed.
Code: Select all
sudo modprobe uvcvideo
