Linux Minterprise Idea

Post by Knuckl3head »

Hi Linux Mint,

I am thinking about an Enterprise edition for Linux Mint. I was thinking I could combine CentOS and Linux Mint into one edition which I am thinking I should call Linux Minterprise. Is this a good idea?

What exactly do you mean by combining them? They're not very similar in any regard.

Not sure how you intend to combine CentOS and Linux Mint, as for example the package management systems are different (RedHat vs. Debian) and so the Mint tools like Software Manager and Update Manager won't work on CentOS without you adapting the source code to work with RedHat instead of Debian. Same goes for many of the Mint tools, those are written for Debian based distros and won't work on RedHat based distros without source code changes.

Both Cinnamon and MATE are available for Fedora and also in source code form, so you can probably get these to work on CentOS.

As for using the Mint name and Mint branding (icons, wallpaper, and so on) you can not use those without permission from Clem. See some more info about that here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=28717&f=17

It ia going to be mostly Linux Mint. I am just going to see how CentOS works and include some custom code.
