Trouble with Screen width

Post by rojasrod »

Hi Everyone,

As I booted Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon 64bit on my new Acer Aspire AX3470-EF10P, from a live CD, on compatibility mode because I would not boot otherwise, and there was a warning that Linux Mint could not set a certain frequency, I assume it had to do with my monitor, a Samsung 63.9kHz 60Hz PP, 1280x1024.

after booting the sreen has two black sides, not taking advantage of the full width of the screen.

from other threads I understand that the following information may be helpful to troubleshoot, but I don't know what it all means. I will be very thankful if you can help.

Re: Trouble with Screen width

You are running your AMD graphics card with the generic vesa driver. Have you looked in Additional Drivers to install another driver? The generic vesa driver is generally a fall back for when you are having problems, but ideally you'd switch to either the open source or proprietary driver specific to your brand of graphics card.

Amd ATI legacy drivers are not supported. This is a newer problem - it was resolvable until lm 13 but on lm 14 a solution is still awaited.

I have a similar problem - VESA fails and the refresh rate is 0.0 hz. There are ways to install legacy amd drivers however have not gone that route which mostly seems to break the system on every update ??

some details

$ inxi -Gx
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI M52 [Mobility Radeon X1300] bus-ID: 01:00.0
X.Org: 1.13.0 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded: fbdev) FAILED: vesa Resolution: 1400x1050@0.0hz
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.2, 128 bits) GLX Version: 2.1 Mesa 9.2-devel Direct Rendering: Yes

$ xrandr
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 1400 x 1050, current 1400 x 1050, maximum 1400 x 1050
default connected 1400x1050+0+0 0mm x 0mm
1400x1050 0.0*

Am making a new post with more details but as of now lm 14 xfce on old hardware is pretty horrendous
