SOLVED: Crashing while updating - Mint 13 xfce

Post by vaporjourney »

After a fresh install today of Mint 13 xfce, I am having constant issues with system crashes. It happens frequently while only browsing the web with Firefox, and ALWAYS crashes while trying to run the update manager. I have even tried to update the kernel to 3.4.4 to get around this, with no luck due to crashes within the terminal.

I'm switching to xfce after a few issues with Mint 13 Cinnamon, and wasn't expecting this with xfce. I had problems with overheating within Cinnamon, and was using Jupiter to try to get around this. It always was a problem, part of the reason I am trying to get xfce to work, and potentially what is happening again within xfce...???

Any help is clearly appreciated, and the details of my system are here:

Your CPU temp at 81 deg c? That is way too hot and if sensors output is correct I do not think it will last.
Also fan no speed? not running?
Sensors: System Temperatures: cpu: 81.0C mobo: N/A
Fan Speeds (in rpm): cpu: N/A
:!: May be you should check some hardware first?

just capture my comp's to show its typical temps,, my room temp is around 30degC

and this is ubuntu xfce with 3.2 kernel
~$ uname -r

Thanks for the response Wayne. Late last night, I was able to update to 3.4.4. kernel, and run the update manager as well. Still, I'm having issues with random crashes. The laptop is crashing while surfing firefox, though not as quickly as before. I've got a different sensor reading, which seems a bit more reasonable, but still too high:

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +65.0°C (crit = +105.0°C)

k8temp-pci-00c3
Adapter: PCI adapter
Core0 Temp: +58.0°C
Core0 Temp: +55.0°C
Core1 Temp: +61.0°C
Core1 Temp: +57.0°C

In fact the problem was the fan not turning on. Although the fan did not look to be coated in dust, a quick cleaning took care of it. Now the fan spins when it should, and my standard temps have dropped about 20* C
