LMDE: Logitech headset no sound?

Post by DaComboMan »

Schoelje,

This is where the mystery continues!
Just rebooted with LMDE and sound is coming out just fine.
Of course, Logitech headset is another issue (as i probably have to reboot to see if it'll work or not).
No sound out of headsets for now.

I'm lost...I just checked all Alsa and Pulse packages on both LMDE and LMDE KDE and they are identical except for some extra packages in LMDE KDE.
Common packages:

Code: Select all

alsa-base
alsa-utils
gstreamer0.10-alsa
gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio
libao-common
libao4
libasound2
libasound2-plugins
libgsm1
libopenal-data
libopenal1
libpulse-mainloop-glib0
libpulse0
libsdl1.2debian
linux-sound-base
oss-compat
pulseaudio
pulseaudio-esound-compat
pulseaudio-module-gconf
pulseaudio-module-x11
pulseaudio-module-zeroconf
pulseaudio-utils
LMDE KDE specific packages:

Code: Select all

alsa-oss
libcanberra-pulse
pulseaudio-module-bluetooth
timidity
It seems very unlikely that these packages may prevent your hardware from working correctly (but you could try removing them and see what happens after a reboot).

I wish I could help you, but I'm not much of use in this regard.

LMDE: Logitech headset no sound?

Post by DaComboMan »

I'm in the process of re-installing LMDE and will do my best at following your instructions on installing KDE.
Of course, my laptop seems to be some kind of exception to the rules (serious sound issues in the past with LMDE too!).

After reading up here and there to resolve these issues,
i've decided to do a sudo apt-get update first and then
sudo apt-get upgrade (doing at present time).
Then hopefully after this, sound will work (after reboot) for both laptop speakers and logitech headset.

In order not to hog up this thread, i'll p.m. you as situation evolves.

ohh please don't  if you are going to use the command line with lmde to upgrade it use dist-upgrade always (or use mintupdate)

Let's see what I can do...
I've been googling for the past hour and found quite some issues with your chip set: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller [8086:293e] (rev 03)

It looks a bit like this:
http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.ph ... &sk=t&sd=a

But it was also mentioned it had to do with the kernel...and LMDE hasn't got the same kernel as LMDE KDE.
LMDE has 3.2.0-2 and LMDE KDE 3.2.0-3
I feel, but can't proove, that this is where we need to look for a solution.
You could try and install the older squeeze kernel and see (or hear) what happens when you reboot.
Run these to find out which ones you can install:

Code: Select all

apt search linux-headers
apt search linux-image
It's probably version 2.6 (stable)

it would be funny if that solution would give DaComboMan finally sound :D it's the same i use http://www.webupd8.org/2010/11/fix-hda- ... sound.html to fix my "lovely" card
your card seems to be the acl268 and this http://askubuntu.com/questions/43628/no ... 801i-audio is the closest i found dealing with it (from a multitude of others links)

anyway we need some extra info (please)
1- exactly what laptop/desktop you have (brand and model)
2- from within lmde-kde run please

Code: Select all

aplay -l
3- and also

Code: Select all

sudo su

Code: Select all

alsactl init

At the moment of fresh install proceeded to upgrade (1,225 recommended updates = 1,001 mb).
Accepted the initial request to install recommended entries then skipped the other odd half dozen prompts including the last one for GRUB.
So far, i've still got sound and dual boot is just like before (priority to Windows 7).

As requested, here is data on LMDE:

LMDE: Logitech headset no sound?

Post by Schoelje »

Okay, now I see that both 3.2.0-2 and 3.2.0-3 are installed.
I presume that you boot from the 3.2.0-3 kernel but to be sure, please check

Code: Select all

uname -r

uname -r
3.2.0-3-486

What's "funny" is the fact that there is a Logitech headset option that appears.
It's just that no sound is flowing out of it.

Still some sound after reboot. Phew!

If you prefer, i can wipe LMDE and install your LMDE KDE for further testing.

Now my dear Dr. Watson, we need to find the beast that is causing you such grieve...
We are going to fence it in until there's no way left to go!

First, make sure the police force is at full strength:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install mintupdate-debian
After that we are going to, strategically, place the fences, thus limiting its space to move so it must, eventually, show its true face:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install pulseaudio
Note the changes before you commit them then start your search from there (reboot)

If you still can hear it, you need to place new fences until the beast has stopped howling.
Remember that the last notes you took will, eventually, reveal its hiding place.

Take this old but very experienced hound, he will bring you in the right direction:

Code: Select all

apt search pulse | grep ^i
apt search alsa | grep ^i
Good hunting, my friend!

Not the usual suspects, that is rather disappointing!

Let me ponder (google) on this for a while...

Found your model here:
http://lxr.linux.no/#linux+v3.2.19/Docu ... Models.txt

Code: Select all

ALC662/663/272
asus-mode1 ASUS
asus-mode2 ASUS
asus-mode3 ASUS
asus-mode4 ASUS
asus-mode5 ASUS
asus-mode6 ASUS
asus-mode7 ASUS
asus-mode8 ASUS
And here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?s= ... ostcount=3) I found the following suggestion:

Code: Select all

sudo echo "options snd-hda-intel model=asus-mode4" >> /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
sudo alsa force-reload

Tried the alsa reload bit but that didn't do anything.

What's odd (but always handy) is that the OS responds to the volume controls (not mute though) on the Logitech headset no matter what option i choose.

Perhaps my headset is a case in a million.
Who would use a Logitech headset with incorporated volume controls on the wire and uncomfortable synthetic leather earmuffs for listening?
It might be best to leave it to the head honchos to resolve this issue.
You might want to keep working on your definitive LMDE KDE .iso and consider my case "closed" in the mean time.

as far as i can see this kind of headset needs to be configured as a 2nd soundcard but honestly this is a bit over my head  handing over to Schoelje.
