Wait for KDE version?

Postby Bakunin on Sun Dec 31, 2006 9:03 am

First off, i must say that i LOVE this distro and would very much like using it. But, I'm holding back due its its GNOME environment, as i very much like KDE. Having read through the forums, ive found some scattered info about add-on CDs, DVD version, etc. and would like to get an idea of how long i would have to wait, and what to wait for. I basically just want to use an actual KDE environment (i.e. not just adding the packages).

Will it be a long wait for any DVD version, add-on CD, KDE version, etc. that would provide me KDE?

Thank you very much in advance -- I'm having trouble making sense of it all.

Your confusion is understandable. The community as a whole does not really have a solid stance on KDE.

Here is what we know currently:

1. Supposedly, a KDE version of Linux Mint will be made in the near future. The developers have mentioned a development cycle of about one month between versions and that version 2.3 would have KDE as its default desktop environment. If that schedule remains intact, then in February or March, KDE-based Linux Mint would be available.

2. The add-on disc (CD or DVD) will include KDE for installation after Linux Mint itself installs. The projected time-frame for its release was about one week after the release of Linux Mint 2.1 ("Bea"). However, a healthier expectation might be some time in January. Remember that this is a volunteer effort.

The community has been voting on when the KDE version would be pursued. Please feel free to vote on the issue, if you have not already.

In short, nobody really knows if or when a KDE version of Linux Mint will exist. We just have to wait and see.

Okay, thanks for clearing it all up for me. I'll install it anyways, as this is the best distro Ive pondered(almost all the complications Ive had with (k)ubuntu seem to be taken-on here, plus its not like any other distro will serve my needs like this one) Not to mention Ive noticed it having quite a supportive community.

Glad to have found you guys :D

If you really want KDE you can still install it afterwards. That's what some of us did here. I too use KDE as my primary desktop.

Whatever Desktop we use, so long as it zips along on modest hardware I will be happy.

I agree, KDE is much preferred here also. It just isn't the same adding it on through the repos. Not everything syncs right.

It comes down to preference.

My wife Loves Mint and gnome and I love KDE  Maybe she doesn't really love me - lol

I have admitedly used KDE far more than gnome. The only real time I used gnome was since the Mint 2 series came out but I am going back to KDE for sure. I find it suits me more and my 2 favourite linux apps are KDE - digikam and k3b.

I'd really love a KDE version! I find that networking is much smoother in KDE than in Gnome for whatever reason... that is really the only benefit I see. I just need to be able to network well and find printers! Gnome has had serious issues with that for me.

k3b works fine in Gnome.

I know the kde apps work in Gnome but I like the whole desktop experience with KDE better.

Network browsing and integration is miles ahead of Gnome.

I have a home network that all the PC's in the house use as all of our media is stored there.

It would be cool if you could choose which DE to use at installation, if they move to only KDE then I'll have to find another distribution to use.

I believe Clem will just be making separate versions for Gnome, KDE, and XFCE.
