HP Printer Scanner - scanning no longer works

Post by momist »

Hi, I can't seem to find any other posts on this problem, so here goes:

I'm running Linux Mint 13 (Maya) with Cinnamon desktop. I have a HP Photosmart Premium c310 multi-function printer with ethernet connection and wireless. Up until recently, the scanner function would work fine with Simple Scan and I'm now part way through a big, occasional, project. After some Mint updates (I suspect), the scanner is no longer recognised. I have since updated the HPLIP driver to the latest version, and still the machine does not see the scanner.

Can anyone advise how I should solve this problem? I've just discovered the "system-config-printer" command, but can't find anything similar for a scanner.

Thanks

I wonder if you are running a 64bit system?

I see this caused an issue in post #3 here

https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/207469

and you updated from here to 3.12.10a .............???????

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/in ... index.html

you can check what
sane-find-scanner
and
scanimage -L
report in a terminal.............

Sorry it's been a while. I've been doing other things.

sane-find-scanner does not detect it on the network.

Similar problem with another HP multifunction (OJ_6700) with Mint MAYA 64 bits.
First, this network printer works perfectly on Mint9 (with HPLIP from HP) and also on MINT LMDE installed with MATE, using HPLIP from synaptic (not the same repos). All this on the same PC.
On MAYA, I installed HPLIP from HP but synaptic reports that another version is also present (should I suppress?). Nevertheless, the printer and the fax functions are working. The HPLIP status service (confirming version 3.12.10a) is visible on the toolbar. But when trying to use the scanner, it launches xsane, and print an error saying 'hpaio:/net/OfficeJet_6700?ip=nnn' cannot handle.
I'll try to re-install and I'll report what happens...
Some help would be welcomed...
Thanks

Sorry, I posted this in too many threads. My saga with hplip can be followed here:

Similar problem with a recent HP multifunction (OJ 6700):
Mint 9 with HP hplip : works perfect
Mint LMDE with synaptic hplip : works perfect
Mint 13 64 mate or cinnamon with HP hplip : printer works, scanner does not

One difference : with Mint 9 and LMDE, scanner uses simple scan, while Mint 13 uses xsane
Also, with Mint13 the scanner URI is found, but then there is an error, 'unsupported command'

I really don't see why it doesn't work with Mint 13.

I don't know whether you are on MInt13 64 bit. If you are try this. I am using Mint 13 Mate 64bit and a HP4620 printer/scanner. I downloaded and installed hplip 3.12.11 and the scanner doesn't work. It is not even detected. However I have solved the problem like this:

Getting scanner to work with Mint13 Mate 64bit:

1) If necessary manually use pluma as root to add 'hpaio' into '/etc/sane.d/dll.conf', that is if 'hpaio' doesn't appear already.

2) Use File Manager, probably caja, to go to /usr/lib and /usr/lib64, both as administrator/root.

In lib64, make link of directory 'sane', and then cut and paste it into directory /usr/lib; rename the created link as 'sane'. (N.B. There is probably already an empty directory 'sane' in /usr/lib which will first have to deleted or renamed in some meaningless way such as 'sane.original.empty').

This worked ok for me on 08/08/12. Now scanner works fine, either simplescan or xsane.

Great ! It now works.
The real trick was to create the link from /usr/lib to /usr/lib64, where there was an empty entry.
I hope this will be corrected in the future.

By the way, I find this printer of better quality than my previous CANON PIXMA machine (not the same age, thought)

Thank you.
