can i ask to the users (not only here in this topic but also) that when reporting malfunctions give the other at least a minimum overview of the hardware involved?

ycan do it easily posting back the terminal output of
Code: Select all
inxi -F
(this way everybody will know if it's 32 or 64b, if it's using nvidia or amd, all the small details that can make all the difference)

in the system i'm at the moment inxi -F reports (just as an example)
Code: Select all

@Roland, @alexdowad, with you both having an Ivy Bridge series processor that could be related. I'd recommend trying a newer kernel than the 3.2 series which you get from the repositories.

The newest kernel tested with Ubuntu 12.04 Precise (on which Linux Mint 13 is based) is 3.4. The files for that are here: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/ma ... 4-precise/. You may instead also try a 3.5 series kernel built and tested for Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal, which is much more current. Though it hasn't been tested for Precise, there is nothing barring you from using it. Latest kernel from 3.5 series is here: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/ma ... 7-quantal/.

To figure out which files to download and how to install them, see this guide: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Mainline ... ne_Kernels. Please share if you need more help with that.

For further analysis, it may be that an error is written to your /var/log/syslog file at the time of the freeze. After your system freezes note the time of the freeze. Wait a few minutes, then reboot (so you know for sure which parts of the logfile are from the freeze and which from after your reboot). Then open your /var/log/syslog file in a text editor or log viewer, and scroll down to the timestamp of your freeze. See if there are any errors reported there.

Edit: almost forgot. In the GRUB menu you can always choose to boot with a previous version of the kernel, if the one you installed is giving problems. If your GRUB menu isn't being shown by default during boot, hold down the Shift key during boot to get it to show.

Thanks; I think I will wait for Mint 14 (only a few weeks?), check in the meantime the log file if necessary and let you know.
Now working on my old laptop that never freezes.

Re: Linux Mint 13 keeps freezing completely (Intel Ivy Bridg

To others reading this topic: unless you have similar hardware as OP (Intel Ivy Bridge CPU & GPU) please create a new topic for your problem, and don't post it to this topic. Though symptoms may be similar, unless you have similar hardware the root cause is most likely something else (specific to your hardware).

I had a complete freeze at 9.55. (8.55 computer time)

Even the clock showed the same for several minutes. When trying to move the mouse, there was a spontaneous shut down.

That looks like the beginning of the syslog1 file. Can you post the last part? Just the last 200 lines before the freeze should cover enough information, if there is any to be found. Or compress the file, and you can upload the entire file as attachment.

No, it is the last part! I was away a few minutes, came back and the pc was frozen, so the problem could have been a little bit earlier.

Did you guys know there is or was a bugreport on launchpad about hard freeze on IVB? I deleted the URL but it should be easy enough to find. Random hard freezes on Ivy Bridge with some older kernels.

Well, I can't find anything obvious in the log file. I had problems with Sandy Bridge, and it was logging warnings and errors before it froze. I'd recommend to try the 3.4 or 3.5 series kernel, as a lot of improvements for Ivy Bridge have been done on those.

I'm back with mint (cinnamon).
I did uninstall mint because of frequent freeze.
I'm glad to find that and upgrade of kernel may solved the problem.
But up to date no freeze (couple of hours)

as i see it you have 2 options:
- if you want to stick with maya (after all it's a LTS) you should follow Vincent post above regarding update the kernel;
- the upcoming mint14 (should be released most probably this month - it's at the moment in testing) will bring a new kernel (3.5.x) where this issue is already addressed.

Thanks for the answer,
Yes I want to stay with Mint.
I did try many distro and Mint cinnanmon is my favorite.

I will read a second time what I have to do to upgrade the kernel.
I began with Linux last march, I'm not and expert.... :?

Vincent's method to update the kernel did not work yet, I still have the same kernel installed although I followed his advice. Probably I made a mistake somewhere due to inexperience; I think I will try this tonight:

http://partiallysanedeveloper.blogspot. ... reeze.html

It says:
Code: Select all
cd /tmp && wget -O linux-headers-3.3.6-030300_3.3.6_all.deb http://goo.gl/zNlMy
 sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.3.6-030300_3.3.6_all.deb
 cd /tmp && wget -O linux-headers-3.3.6-generic_i386.deb http://goo.gl/TdBex
 sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.3.6-generic_i386.deb
 cd /tmp && wget -O linux-image-3.3.6-generic_i386.deb http://goo.gl/osZhw
 sudo dpkg -i linux-image-3.3.6-generic_i386.deb

My CPU is AMD so I will start a new thread

Buy someone something for them online once and they will be happy for a day. Get them to get their own Internet connection and they will be happy for the rest of their life.

Roland,
the image and headers installed without any errors in the terminal?
if so try to run
Code: Select all
sudo update-grub
and reboot to see if you have the new kernel available in the grub menu.

avoura,
thanks for that :)
