cobian,
i'm sorry to hear that you are having problems trying to fix this issue.
regarding mint14, the RC was released today (not yet officially announced), you can try it here >> http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/testing/?C=M;O=D
(unless something unexpected happens those will be the base to the official release)

Thanks zerozero.

I'm downloading this; http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/ ... bit-rc.iso

I will test and be back to tell if the freeze problem is solved.

I installed the Rc mint 14. It's real quick and to date (about 2.5 hours) no freeze.
The kernel;
System: Host: Think-Mint Kernel: 3.5.0-17-generic x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: Gnome Distro: Linux Mint 14 Nadia

I could quite easily upgrade the kernel by copy+paste this in the terminal; and pressing <enter> a few times.
Then, to be sure, I entered

Code: Select all

sudo upgrade-grub
and my pc booted with the new kernel. NO freezes up till now, and I am running as much programs at the same time as possible...
BTW: the pc showed no Grub-menu.

Thanks to everyone on the forum, especially Vincent and zerozero.

Hold down the Shift key during boot of your computer to get the GRUB menu to show. It isn't shown by default unless you have more than one operating system installed.

I tried to freeze my computer but I can't.
I opened a lot of software at the same time and all is well.
Mint 14 RC cinnamon is very fast and very stable to date.
I am impressed and very happy with that release.
I guess that the final version will be even better.

For those who see their computer freeze sometime, do not hesitate to try this version.

After the upgrade to a new kernel, everything is running smoothly.
What I wonder: how many hundreds of users have left Linux because of this bug? We will never know. Me too, having bought a new pc for Linux and fed up with the many freezes, nearly left Linux for that other OS until I found the solution here.
:?

Why is this new kernel not pushed to all users? I suppose Ubuntu 12.04 has the same problem?

I think this thread should be marked as 'sticky' and 'solved' (but I am not the topic starter); or a warning should be placed on the home page for new users.

I may well try Linux Mint 14, meanwhile I am using Ubuntu Studio 12.04. I have no intention of leaving Linux -- it is way better than Windows.
Buy someone something for them online once and they will be happy for a day. Get them to get their own Internet connection and they will be happy for the rest of their life.

Hello everyone, the threads for this post are very interesting to me as I have just purchased a new Ultrabook from Novatech using Intel IvyBridge (see my VirtualBox Help thread) and to date under Maya Cinnamon it's been working tremendous. I suppose I should try opening multiple applications and get back to you, but I have had FireFox, LibreOffice, Pidgin, Calculator all open and no freeze ups?

Absolutely no freezing here with mint 14 rc + ivybridge HD4000

mint 13 is based on ubuntu 12.04 which doesn't have good ivybridge support, and afiak freezing is a known issue with 12.04 + ivybridge, so mint 14's newer kernel and drivers will probably fix this issue for people running ivybridge.

With me too. Pls see http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 9&t=106514 for some details (not from a Linux expert, be advised! 8) ).
If you can continue with Ctrl-Alt-F1 (my system sometimes doesn't respond to this or Ctrl-Alt-Del), try tail /var/log/messages as root. I found a psmouse related error. The bug reported in http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=71950 ties the error to the smartscroll option. A common recommendation is to disable the smartscroll option*.
Best regards,
Emerson

*Edit as root /etc/modprobe.d/options
Change or include:
options psmouse smartscroll=0
I have been battling this issue for a couple of months, then found this post.
In my case (Mint 13 and Cinnamon 2.0.14) I unchecked "Enable natural scrolling" and "Enable horizontal scrolling" in Control Center --> Mouse and Touchpad --> Touchpad. It seems to have solved my problem.
