That found some stuff. Wonder why other package tools would not

So I take it I need to purge each of these libqt*.* and the qdbus package. What does the "ii" and the "rc" at the beginning of each line mean? "rc" = release candidate in my experience but may be entirely different here.

Code: Select all

Re: How to install KDE

just be aware that in this cleaning process  you will most probably loose app that you want to keep (i see in this first output vlc for example) best option is to let them go and reinstall them afterwards.

Yeah, and unetbootin I saw go. Will put it back later. So blow away all that stuff, or just what you highlighted in red on page 2 of this thread?

Re: How to install KDE

all the stuff in the last output you provided (purging libqt4-dbus) has to go
after that grep again precise1-ppa1

Re: How to install KDE

OK, blew out anything with precise1~ppa1

did an update, then $ sudo apt-get update | grep -i backport came back empty, so I'm SURE I'm using no backports for ANYTHING.

apg-get kde-full? (I'm nervous  )

checking now (will update the post in minutes)
EDIT:
i can only find one of those packages in the ppa https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+arc ... hive-extra (kde-runtime-data: and as you can see the version is different)

also those 2 libraries are rc (removed and residual config files left-over) i *believe* that it's safe to ignore them.

Re: How to install KDE

Post by marietta_greg »

I blew them out to be sure.

OK, -s install kde-full came back PRETTY clean. File is attached.

The only problem, and I saw it in your post, page 2 is:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
mate-notification-daemon : Conflicts: notification-daemon but it is not going to be installed.
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

Remove the following packages:
1) mate-notification-daemon

Now, I want to keep MATE. Remember, I'm trying out KDE, I may want to go back to MATE, or sometimes use MATE, and don't want to delete parts of it.

I take it, I will not have a notification daemon in KDE if I don't blow out MATE's ? Thought the DMs are stand-alone. What's a dude to do? :o

Re: How to install KDE

Post by zerozero »

 ohh that conflict between mate-notification-daemon and notification-daemon; i saw it ages ago http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 00#p566635
you won't be loosing mate, only changing the way the notifications appear on the screen when using mate. kde has its own notification system.

as far as i can see my work here   is done:
- dependencies are sorted
- kde is installable
- it was an interesting trip these days

can only hope that you give kde a fair try and get involved in this sweet world 8)

Re: How to install KDE

Post by marietta_greg »

OK, I'm going to go for it!

Very interesting trip and I learned a lot. Seems to me dkpg is superior in its ability to be granular about what's installed. But apt handles and pulls in dependencies better, I understand.

I will give it a fair try. I've heard the new KDE is great. I like MATE, but GNOME2 it's getting long in the tooth. Can't get Cinnamon to work (freezes on boot, no solution thru forum), and Unity -fuggedabboudit!

I've been using Ubuntu 8.04 since my last laptop came with Vista on it. MS Pissed me off so much I dumped Windows and never went back. And I'm an MCSE! I push Mint wherever anyone's frustrated with Win. I think Win8 will push more people over here. Looks like a train wreck.

The ONLY thing I find I cannot do in Linux is synch my ipod nano 6th gen. Apple did something with the database which hosed all of the Linux music players sych-ability. Been watching for a fix, but it's looooong in coming.

I will post you on how this KDE install and use goes. Thanks SO much for the help :!:

Re: How to install KDE

almost forgot something :)
after this installation of kde 4.8.x you can then add kubuntu backports ppa and do a

Code: Select all

apt upgrade
to go into 4.9.x
marietta_greg

Re: How to install KDE

Post by marietta_greg »

Backports scare the hell out of me, now. :)

What's compelling about 4.9.x ?
zerozero

Re: How to install KDE

Post by zerozero »

well  i'm using 4.8.4 in one system and 4.9.3 in another; there's no earth-breaking changes, the layout of the DE doesn't change as it did from kde3.x to kde4.x or from gnome2.x to gnome3.x

if you want to use the semantic desktop (nepomuk) 4.9.x works way better (i don't use it)

if you want to use activities they are "almost" mature in 4.9

i hear that the pim suite is also more functional in 4.9 (for me has always been broken and i just gave up on it - probably something i need to check again)

this is just a very very small overview of my few strong points on 4.9 over 4.8; then you have the general improvement and bug-fixes that come with every new release

as a final note some say that kwin is now a lot faster, smarter, better 8) it has been the best WM for me for long
