I'm glad it helped :) . I agree that MATE is probably the best choice for you (unless you find that you like KDE or Cinnamon better). Looking back I didn't realize how long the post was - I tend to ramble a little bit  .

Finally! I have been waiting for this for so long!

One question though, is their a way to upgrade from RC to Final release? Because I am getting quite bored using Wi**ows

Unless I'm mistaken, simply applying any updates to RC would eventually get you to final. Someone will most assuredly correct me if I am wrong.

I'm downloading Mint 14 Cinnamon RC now. I'll have to wait until I can get some DVD's tomorrow to burn and install. Really looking forward to running Mint again. It's been a long time since I last used Mint. I've been distro hopping for quite some time. And I really like the direction Cinnamon is taking.

Capture the text and put it in a new tutorial. In fact, I think it would be a great link from the Linux Mint download page itself. The amount of downloads would be better optimized--reduced--if users had a quick way to get a clue about what they're downloading.

But seriously do save it, because it is better than average. It belongs on some wiki.

I found YUMI a useful way to make a multi-boot flash drive to test various Linux versions. Ended up with Mint MATE, Cinnamon, and Ubuntu as options. Much to my surprise, hated KDE.

cww, you should make this post into a guide and post it separately. I think a lot of Linux users, newcomers especially, could do with a quick bird's eye round-up of the various options.
Thank you for this thread. That’s all I can say. You most definitely have made this forum into something special. You clearly know what you are doing, you’ve covered so many bases. Thanks!

It's coming along wonderfully. I've had a couple of crashes in the RC, but overall it's really stable. The software manager is a bit wonky; it'll stop being able to install or remove packages after awhile most of the time, forcing you to restart the application. It's not good idea to set up a long queue with it.

Cinnamon is beautiful. It is absolutely great to use as well. I'm actually preferring it over Windows 7's interface

Been using Cinnamon-edition of the RC on my Acer Ultrabook for 2 days now. Working insanely good. Love new Cinnamon and Nemo!

Some issue with the repo though:

Something really weird happened to the sysinfo in cinnamon after reboot. See screenshot for more explanation. Look at the bottom right corner.

Just a simple question.

If you install Mint 14 RC, will it be necessary to reinstall it when the stable version is released? Or will the previously installed RC be made identical to the stable version by the update process?

that cinnamon theme (i guess it's glass mint) has a problem (it's not the only one tho, seems like an interaction between some cinnamon settings - specially panel related and some themes), see the theme's page for a fix http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/themes/view/128

joez,
if you're using the RC, applying all the updates available in MU will equal the final release except if you are in 64bit; you'll have to do this also
http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2211
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

apt update

Where do you download the GOLD edition? I don't see a clickable download link on that site?
