bash or perl??

What is the general opinion on scripting?

Do you prefer the good old school bash? Or the newer faster perl?

I was having this conversation with a friend the otherday and was curious.

I am a bash user normally, never bothered to learn perl as my first senior sys admin said it wasnt as useful. But I have recently learn where the limits are with bash and I have to say perl is looking rather tempting right now.

Although no expert by any means, I was very impressed by Perl when we had to deal with gigantic ASCII GIS data files, as well as generating HTML on the fly.
