<SOLVED> Tryed to install GTK+, now i have no text

Post by erre »

Hi everybody,
today I've tried to install GTK+, downloading the 'stable' sources from here
Everything was going ok, but at some point, I noticed some windows had no titles but some squares instead, so I decided to reboot the system ( )
When the desktop showed up (I use autologin) all the text on the system had gone (almost all, firefox tabs and the webs worked well, and so did text IN emacs)
Here are some pictures:
Picture 1
Picture 2

I'd like to fix this asap as it's my only computer and I use it a lot (right now I'm running the live version of LMDE on it)
I can tell that I installed gettext, libzlib (or something similar) and all the dependencies they needed, using apt-get, apart from the sources I downloaded from gtk.org.
Also, i did a 'dpkg-reconfigure libglibc' (not exactly like that), as a previous version than the one I installed manually was already installed (anyway, the version of GTK+ i downloaded required an even newer version... that was confusing).
If there is anything else you need to know just tell me, i can use other ttys to run commands. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Here is part of my /var/log/apt/term.log --> http://pastie.org/private/zkkzkxivj0fgsendqarlw

Some themes wont work on GTK+ that were working before...

LMDE with UPack3 had that when upgrading to UPack4 until reboot. Needed reboot only tho. Theme was redone in Upack but needed reboot to be used.

Try other themes. OR ideally get one made specifically for GTK+

Hi J.Jay,
thank you for your reply, but it isn't working as theme's names are nothing but squares and the system is using the default values no matter which theme i select (same happens for the wallpaper, it's all black because it can't read the config files... T_T)

What I was trying to do is install the GTK+ libraries so I could use them to make UIs for my programs. I didn't think that could affect the desktop environment... (and I said before that text inside Firefox and Emacs was ok, but it's not in 'pluma', everything on nautilus, cinnamon menu, gnome-terminal...)
Could it all have happened when doing 'dpkg-reconfigure' to the GLib libraries or any other libraries? (I didn't even finish installing GTK+, as it needed an even higher version of GLib...)
If that's the case maybe I could remove this last version installed (2.32) and reinstall the previous version (which i don't know)?

Thank you again for your reply

Sorry if my 'confused answer' threw you off...

Meant when UPack4 came around Clem and co updated the theme to work in both GTKs but need reboot to activate. Icons (looked like blocks), text, even wallpaper (some said) were effected in update. Threw some off, till reboot where all was displayed right again. But people using non-(mint)default themes may or may not display right (even after reboot).

Anyways hope you find solution

Thank you for your replys J.Jay, and i finally solved the problem. I patiently removed the packages I had installed, both the ones installed through apt-get and the ones installed manually (didn't ever imagine devs where so nice to include an 'uninstall' option in the makefiles... :D)
Now system is working as it did before, so I'm going to mark this as solved, but I'd appreciate if anybody could help me install the GTK+ 3 libraries (the ones for developing!!)

Thank you very much everybody

they should be in your repos (as long as you have deb-src)
