@coolpup69ca: Thank you very much. This is exactly what I needed. I had been stumped attempting to install GEdit from the official GEdit site.
A note to others who are going through the same thing: I had originally installed GEdit from the Software Manager without noticing how old it was. In order to install gedit-common, as coolpup69ca describes, I used the Synaptic Package Manager to remove the previous GEdit files. I suppose I could have used the Software Manager but sometimes it's nice to see more details.
