Clean your computer of hundreds MB's of unwanted languages

Post by GeneC »

(This is a repost of a reply I put on another thread)

=============================================

No need to have many languages on your computer, if you only know one or two....
I've always removed several hundred megabytes of unnecessary 'locales' (language packs) after a new installation.

There are two ways.

1. Bleach bit. (Its in the repos)
Option below lets you choose which to keep and which to purge permanently.

2. There is also a command line program (script)also in the repos.
That let you choose (during its installation) which language packs (locales) to purge.
Its "localepurge"

After installing run

Code: Select all

sudo localepurge
It also runs automatically after any upgrade.

Well worth installing.

NOTE:
As with any programs that uninstall things USE CAREFULLY! ......

Nice little tutorial, GeneC. Installing Bleachbit and cleaning up unused languages is one of the first things I do after an install. It typically cleans out around 350-400 MB on a Debian install and 150-200 MB on an Ubuntu/Mint install.

Hi squeezy

localepurge is nice as it works automatically with every update.
I still check with Bleachbit, as I am a 'neatnick'....

I installed and ran localepurge.

Code: Select all

sudo localepurge
localepurge: Disk space freed in /usr/share/locale: 156820 KiB
localepurge: Disk space freed in /usr/share/man: 3872 KiB
localepurge: Disk space freed in /usr/share/gnome/help: 26752 KiB
localepurge: Disk space freed in /usr/share/omf: 1320 KiB
localepurge: Disk space freed in /usr/share/doc/kde/HTML: 0 KiB

Total disk space freed by localepurge: 188764 KiB
184MB
Not bad!
Thanks for the suggestion!

Downloading those language packs is the most time consuming process of installing Mint, over 3G. I was told one can skip that step during the installation, but I've never seen an option for that.

That's because it's "hidden" - if you expand to terminal view during installation, a small button with "Skip" will appear when the "downloading language packs" appears.

Recommend bleachbit at any rate - took 300mb off my Mint 14 RC install (and 700+mb off my Mint 13 install, maybe's there's less chaff these days).

I like Bleachbit also! It's a very handy clean-up tool. First application i install after any installation of Linux.
