and smplayer and mplay2. all of these crash on my pentium 4 system. I wrote to Julien Lavergne who made a patch.I was inquiring whether his program might work with my linux mint version. he said I should direct my inquiry to this community in the following email. the email summarizes my problem. hope I ain't breakin any rules by posting it. you can tell from my words what a noob I am. I would really like to get some of these media players going and I'm hoping someone will have a similar fix as Julien did for the Ubuntu crowd. Thanks.

Sorry, you have to contact Mint directly, I don't have any contact with them.

Postby blockhead on Tue Nov 20, 2012 12:39 pm

does anyone else,beside me still use a pentium 4 computer? and if you do have you managed to get mplayer or mplayer2 or smplayer running on that cpu? I can't seem to do it. I now that programmers have figured this problem out and wrote a patch for Ubuntu for this. Thanks

Yes, but not as my main desktop system. But as multimedia system connected to my LCD flatscreen tv.

and if you do have you managed to get mplayer or mplayer2 or smplayer running on that cpu?

I'm running Vlc as movie-/mediaplayer. (s)mplayer is installed as back-up player.

I can't seem to do it. I now that programmers have figured this problem out and wrote a patch for Ubuntu for this.

Since Mint is based on Ubuntu you could try that patch. Do you have a link to that patch/website?

that is what ran thru my mind as well. this patch was written by Julien Lavergne. He has some PPA repository and apparently the patch is there and is downloadable. I will try and locate it. I did write direct to Julien, and I did run that idea past him. He made no comment on that. He only referred me to the linux mint community for answers.

the above post was made by the Ubuntu Programmer Julien Lavergne. I am a newbie so not really sure how to access this patch for download. I would be willing to execute the patch on my pentium four to see if it fixes this issue in Linux Mint Maya Cinnamon 32 bit.

Ubuntu Quantal is the base for Mint 14 Nadia. So using that PPA shouldn't give any problems.

I downloaded the following debian package from the link to the PPA mplayer2 2.0.554...i386.deb and when I go to
try and install it by right clicking the package installer opens and tries to run it and gives me the following error:

Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libavcodec53 (>= 6:0.8.3-1~)|libavcodec-extra-53 (>= 6:0.8.3)

Can someone have a look at the file I downloaded and help me to try and install it. I think this is the fixed version so that it will allow mplayer2 to be able to work on a Pentium 4 machine. Thanks very much.

The file you downloaded needs the libavcodec-extra-53 package but instead it found the libavcodec53 package, so if you install that required package the problem should be fixed.

I just gave that link to that PPA (https://launchpad.net/~gilir/+archive/ppa) a look and i discovered this: The PPA was intended for Ubuntu versions 7.10 up to and including 10.04. Not for newer versions. Keep in that in mind when you encounter some issues with this PPA. Best is to use this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~gilir/+archive/updates since this includes all versions. When you want to use this PPA for now and in the future, you can add in to your sourcelist by typing thie folowing command in a terminal;
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gilir/updates
and then press Enter. Foolow the instructions given in the terminal.

I have added the ppa/updates archive to my synaptic manager and updated the software. when I put mplayer2 in the
search box it only comes up with one version, and I can't force the version because it is greyed out Can u please advise
me how to get the 2.0-554-gf63dbad-1ubuntu1~ppa3 ...there is also a mplayer2 file ending with ~ppa2.

how do I get this version instead of the one being offered by synaptic. thanks.

I have downloaded the patched mplayer2 file and I have changed the libavcodec, but the version is still not the one
indicated in the error message ...6:0.8.1 ..still getting same error from synaptic.
