Found a solution myself:

- Do not use UNetbootin or Ubuntu ImageWriter.
- Use - you guessed it - the terminal.

Follow the respective instructions closely under:"How to make a live USB stick using the terminal".

Or: burn the iso to CD...

I'd like to try Nadia.

Am currently running Katya without issues.
Downloaded Nadia 14 MATE 32bit
Checked MD5
Created live-USB startup on USB drive (tried with both UNetbootin and Ubuntu ImageWriter and yes, had to rename .iso to .img on the latter)
Changed boot sequence in BIOS.

Alas, Nadia wont boot.

I'd appreciate any/all smart advice as to what I might have missed

It doesn't look like a hardware issue to me.
It rather appears, as if a file is missing or buggy. However, I just couldn't find what or which exactly.
Perhaps one of the required paths is misspelled, directories or files are misnamed or something like that?

Has anyone actually run Nadia from live-USB without issues? Or could someone just try and let us know what happened? Don't have to install it, just see if it runs at all. That would be good.

I don't really see any component in your output that could cause boot failures. It's certainly not related to PAE, which remoulder suggested.

I also can't boot from USB. In my case, I think it is because I have a "7-in-1 Floppy Drive & Media Reader Combo" (factory installed) which is on USB. This is a floppy drive which also has two slots to accept various types of card memory. Even with USB booting enabled in the BIOS, my machine won't boot from my external USB ports, but I suspect would boot from one of the memory card slots (can't try it because I don't have any of the memory cards). So if you have a similar device, that may be your problem.

@ slipstick: If there is no floppy and no memory card in the device, then it should be ignored by BIOS. I don't think this device is causing you problems. I can USB boot fine, on a computer that also has a USB-connected cardreader with no cards in it.

If your BIOS has a boot menu, it should list all USB devices that it can boot from.

My BIOS boot menu lists 3 devices under "Boot Device Priority". For each of those I can only choose between my hard drive, my floppy drive, and my DVD. There is a separate entry for "USB Boot" where I can choose either "Enabled" or "Disabled". Currently I have the USB Boot enabled and the device priority set for DVD as first priority, floppy as second priority, and hard drive as third priority.

Anyway, this inability to boot from USB is not a problem for me as I can run from live DVD OK and will use that to install. I just mentioned it in case the OP had similar hardware.
