[SOLVED]Dual Booting Win7 & Mint 14 MATE; Best method?

Post by Zayofethos »

Hi all,

I have an Asus 1225C with Win7 installed on it, 500g hard drive partitioned into two right now(100gb and 400gb respectively). I have done some reading online and there seem to be many varying guides to dual booting Win7 and Linux Mint.

I am wondering how to best go about this? My understanding is that the hard drive must be partitioned for both OS's to work smoothly. The question is, how to go about it? Can I just use the Advanced Partitioning Tool in the Installation DVD to tell Linux Mint to use partition of 400gb totally for itself, of do I have to do something more detailed?

The articles I have read on this are the following; the first one advising one to partition the hard drive with Windows prior to installing Mint and the other by doing the partitioning with the Mint Installation disc.

How have you guys gone about installing Win7 and Linux Mint side by side?

Thanks a lot for all the advice!

Hi Zayofethos and welcome to Mint,

The best thing to do since this will be your first time is to just follow the defaults on the Mint install when asked about partitioning just tell it to install mint alongside windows it will partition the disk for you you can always adjust it later if you find you need more room.

There is a lot of advice out there but for a newbie to linux just stick with the default install.
Good Luck.

NOTE: AS ALWAYS BACK UP ANY IMPORTANT FILES YOU HAVE ON WINDOWS FIRST!

How did that work for you? Did you have to choose/change bootloader?
