Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed
I'm in PAE now (I hate only using half of my CPU). Should I do a fresh boot before trying that or do you think I'd be safe(-er) to try that once my Webilder get in the vm is done? Either way I'll transcribe the steps to make sure I have them handy if I wind up back at the console to log back in.
Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed
It doesn't really matter if you reboot or not (it's not Windows).
If you end up without X, you can simply (re)move xorg.conf and reboot.

Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed
I didn't think I needed to reboot but I've been fighting the drivers enough I wanted to ask. On a side note, my install got me bitten by the no audio bug but the tip in the LMDE KDE UP5 thread got it fixed pretty easily. I'll let you know how things go driver wise after the reboot.
ETA: I forgot to mention that when I finally did the manual install the nvidia-glx looked like it hadn't been installed, and I had forgotten to blacklist nouveau. About to try the new set of steps.

Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed
It turns out we both forgot to have me run sudo nvidia-xconfig before the reboot because I got an 800x600 resolution screen when I booted back in. I still have the complaint form KWin, plus I'm noticing some bowing in the Note plasmoid on my desktop. Hopefully this screenshot will show what I'm talking about.
ETA: I did some checking on the effects issue and found a reference to the compositing type in Desktop Effects > Advanced. It turns out I was using the XRender compositing and once I changed it to OpenGL it looks like I've gotten my effects back. I'm not sure what's causing the bowing though.

Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed
It amazes me every time that graphics seem to be different for each system
Talking about DDM:
Clem and others are making me change a lot in DDM: looks, but especially handling of graphics drivers.
The next version we'll be able to activate different drivers per graphics card (thus switching between drivers).
A lot of work is still to be done (and the December month is one of the busiest of the year) so I hope I get it ready when UP6 comes out.

Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed
Who knew something as seemingly simple as graphics drivers could turn out to be such a royal pain in the rear? I'll do what I can to help test things, especially since now I know how to keep my laptop from booting to the terminal. I bet the rest of the Mint community has little to no idea how nice it will be when they can simply fire up DDM to install the PAE kernel and drivers. Thanks for putting so much work into it for us!

I get "No supported hardware detected"
Jockey doesn't find anything either, though it used to suggest nvidia-current in Ubuntu/Mint and some experimental nvidia driver in elementary OS.
I have Nvidia Optimus and Bumblebee installed working perfectly, so I have no need for the tool but thought I would point out that it, like jockey, in my case, doesn't find the Nvidia driver.

I see that querying apt takes a lot of time:lizbeth wrote:Just ran on a fresh install of nadia... 15 minutes seemed a bit slow to me.... here's the log
aptitude search linux-headers
took about 5 minutes and should take a second (or two).
I bet it's not always like this.

I'm rewriting most of the DDM code at the moment and supporting these hybrid chip sets is one of the many items on my todo list.bimsebasse wrote:Code: Select all

Could you tell me which packages you need to install and how you have to configure your system (preferably on both Ubuntu and Debian)?
Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed
Ah, I have never configured beyond installing nvidia-current; the current better solution was taken care of by Bumblebee and I don't know what exactly it does on system level beyond modifying the kernel (with bbswitch), installing nvidia-current and activating Intel graphics as the default. I'd love to help if you want to see some system config files or anything.

I'll get back to you when I'm at the point of implementing hybrid chipsets.bimsebasse wrote:Ah, I have never configured beyond installing nvidia-current; the current better solution was taken care of by Bumblebee and I don't know what exactly it does on system level beyond modifying the kernel (with bbswitch), installing nvidia-current and activating Intel graphics as the default. For now I have my hands full with the upcoming DDM.
Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed
No worries, mate, this tool is gonna be a major asset to Mint.
Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed
I'm very interested in how DDM might handle hybrid graphics. I know Manjaro supposedly has support for hybrid graphics out of the box, but I've never used it so I don't know exactly how it works.

bimsebasse, I noticed that you put that spam message into you're signature.

Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed
For the past few days I've been spending a lot of time on DDM.
About 60% of the code is being re-written and a lot of new code is added:
The UI so far (but It'll probably change a bit):

- jockey-like handling of Nvidia drivers in Ubuntu.
- nvidia-detect in Debian (re-introduced that one for maintenance purposes).
- Selectable driver activation (user must be able to choose the driver he/she wants to use)
- Graphical drivers can be switched
- New UI

That's looking pretty nice, Schoelje, especially the fact that you're splitting the sections so we can deal with one at a time. I look forward to playing with it.
Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed
first of all the astonishment moment: remember that a few months ago this project was a couple bash scripts
now:
- hybrid cards: yes pretty please.
- "activate different drivers per graphics card": does this means (as the picture suggests) switch between nvidia and nouveau graphically?
