Networking Question

Post by malligt »

From "Whats New in Mint 14"

MintSystem now provides two additional commands:

dns-fix sets your DNS resolution to OpenDNS
xchat-systray.......

Is "dns-fix" (above) safe to use with Mint 13?

Thanks!

Probably. dns-fix just copies a file. Here is the contents of dns-fix: https://github.com/linuxmint/mintsystem ... in/dns-fix. And here is the contents of the file it copies: https://github.com/linuxmint/mintsystem ... esolv.conf. You could edit your own resolv.conf and put this content in there.

xchat-systray changes some settings for XChat. See the commands it runs here: https://github.com/linuxmint/mintsystem ... at-systray. You could run those four commands from the terminal yourself.

Confused......

This file already exists in my Mint 13 (I copied it for you from /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintSystem/templates/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf):

# This file was written by dns-fix (mintsystem)

# OpenDNS
nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220

# Google DNS
# nameserver 8.8.8.8
# nameserver 8.8.4.4

Now, what do I do from here? I'm confused.

Am I all set to use it?

Visit http://www.opendns.com/welcome, it will tell you if you are using OpenDNS or not.
