Microphone not recognised
Hi,
I installed LMDE on a Toshiba Satellite L870-132 laptop.
Works well, except that the microphone is not recognised and doesn't work.
If I go to Preferences -> Sound I can see two drivers on the Output tab (Turks/Whistler HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6000 Series] Digital Stereo (HDMI), and Built-in Audio Analog Stereo). But on the Input tab, I see nothing at all, just a disabled panel.
Any advice as to how I should proceed?
The person who uses this computer wishes to have Skype working...
TIA

Re: Microphone not recognised
Plugging in an external microphone does not make any difference.
Re: Microphone not recognised
I might be able to help but I don't have LMDE on this computer. If I have to, I'll boot up a live medium of it.
Is there a sound mixer someplace? The other idea I had is to find something like 'Other Devices.' If you run dmesg or lspci or lshw to make sure it's detected, is it listed?
If you find settings for sound (listing ALSA), it should be under input someplace. Also, there are other settings in which the volume for the mic might be turned down. If you find it under Input Devices someplace, it will probably be Analog Mono. I might even guess that it's treating the mic as part of the 'sound card.'
I recently configured sound for skype and ALSA/PULSEAUDIO for a usb headset/mic combo. I am also trying to help someone who is running LMDE and wants to use a TV as monitor.
But, if you provide further info, I'll try to see what I can find (either on an installed LMDE or live CD).

Re: Microphone not recognised
Thanks nobodynoze,
I would be very grateful for help.
Typing lspci gives the following:
Complete lspci gives:
dmsg gives:
lshw gives:
Are there more commands I can run to help explain?
I am attaching some screenshots here of the audio settings control panel.
I would be very grateful for help.

I am attaching some screenshots here of the audio settings control panel.
Re: Microphone not recognised
In your screenshot2.png, your microphone is muted. Have you tried raising the volume setting on the microphone?
Re: Microphone not recognised
Actually, the microphone volume control is disabled. If you look closely at Screenshot2.png, you can see that the Input volume control is painted in grey rather than normal colors. So it's not possible to adjust it...
Re: Microphone not recognised
If you have a mixer application, it will probably show if you click on the speaker icon in the notification area. If you have no speaker icon, you probably also do not have a mixer app loaded and should look to install pavucontrol or similar mixer application, because at present any microphone you have is either disabled, muted or not connected from your screen shots.
Re: Microphone not recognised
Hi cwsnyder,
I have a speaker icon in the notification area. It looks normal for the Cinnamon desktop.
See the screen shot I am attaching now.
I have an internal built-in microphone in this laptop. Have not tested if it works in another OS, as I have no other OS installed. However, I have tested plugging in an external microphone that I know works on another computer, and it was not recognised either.
Do you still think it can help to install pavucontrol? I have not needed this on my three other LMDE installations, and the microphone works normally on all those three.

Re: Microphone not recognised
I was suggesting something to try, I don't know if it will help. You seem to need something which has a control for the microphone input, since it looks as if it is disabled at present.
Re: Microphone not recognised
I installed Pavucontrol, but alas, no progress. No hardware input devices are detected - he gives the message "No input devices available".cwsnyder wrote:I was suggesting something to try, I don't know if it will help. Have also upgraded to Update Pack 6, but no help in that either.
Re: Microphone not recognised
I have the same problem as the OP.
Microphone is hooked up, and using alsamixer I can turn up the volume for my SB audigy's microphone input, and even get audio from the microphone, sounds great--- Except that Mint doesn't see the microphone as an available input, and hence the audio from the microphone cannot be passed to any applications for use.
Just like the op, I have no available input devices according to mint, which is rather hilarious considering my soundcard has at least 3 inputs.
Audio output works fine of course, mint has no problems passing that to the soundcard, just that mint apparently can't get anything *from* the soundcard.
Microphone is hooked up, and using alsamixer I can turn up the volume for my SB audigy's microphone input, and even get audio from the microphone, sounds great--- Except that Mint doesn't see the microphone as an available input, and hence the audio from the microphone cannot be passed to any applications for use.

Re: Microphone not recognised
Got it!
in the "sound preferences dialog", enter the "hardware" tab.
(make sure your preferred sound card is selected obviously)
click on the "profile" list, and choose "<your preferred output>+ <your preferred input>"
In my case the profile selected only chose an output, and NO input.
Now my mic shows on the inputs list and shows an audio level when being used/tested.

Re: Microphone not recognised
I had this problem and the solution worked for me - thanks very much. The sound hardware setting in my case was Analogue Stereo Duplex.
