Skype Freeze in LMDE 64

Postby Joris on Sun Jan 29, 2012 4:31 am

Skype freezes just after login.
The system is barely responding, or not responding at all. Keyboard and mouse are almost stuck, the HDD is running and clicking all the time, sometimes ctrl-alt-bs is possible, but most of the time only a hard reset.

This doesn't happen always.
There seems to be a correlation between the time you start Skype after booting the netbook; shortly after booting seems to cause more freezes then waiting <5min and then start Skype.
I have to investigate this more: nor correlation.

It happens with both my netbook and my GF netbook: both Lenovo x121e, LMDE 64, Skype from the repo's 2.2.0.35

I found these, but none of them solves my problem:
http://www.computerandyou.net/2011/05/hoe-to-solve-skype-crashes-and-wont-start-again/
http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/219
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=90028&p=518374
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ia32-libs/+bug/646862

This is what I get when I start Skype (Skype does start and works normally 7/10 times):
Code: Select all
@x121e ~ $ skype

Or who nows how to solve this?

Thanx!

Re: Skype Freeze in LMDE 64+ Ubuntu 64

Skype does not work in Versions V11 both Ubuntu and Mint ! I have tried and exhausted my skills trying to find the cause of this problem, I know that Mint V 10 and Ubuntu V 10 have a perfectly working Skype due to the better sound package installed into the OS.
With Mint V 11 the sound package is sadly lacking in adjustable s and facilities and I am sure this is the cause of the problem. The sound is wheezing and very distorted totally unusable ! I have tried to remove the package and replace it with ALSA mixer sound but have had no success.
Therefore I have removed V 11 Mint and Ubuntu from both computers and re installed V10 Mint and Ubuntu. Now both machines work perfectly with Skype.

@Peter
My x121e with AMD E-350 does not work well with LM 10, that's why I use LMDE.

Same sh**, very annoying :x
Well, it freezes because skype pid load CPU 100%. It long for 8-10 minutes depending of CPU power, then broken pid ends.
If you start skype again it works fine as always.

Try to kill skype pid immidiatelly after its start or just wait until it closes.

Removed & Reinstalled Skype: no improvement
Downloaded skype directly from skype.com: testing if that works better

Have the same issue.
Skype starts, consumes more and more memory until system runs out of swap space. Then skype crashes and is gone. During this process, CPU is 100% busy and computer basically unusable. Takes ca.10 minutes.
Some times Skype will work if restarted, but not always.
Only happens on one out of my three machines that all run LMDE 64-bit - the oldest one. Could this issue be connected to certain specific hardware specs? Single-core processors?

After some research on the net I found something on Debian and Arch fora:

I'm testing this now:
Code: Select all
mkdir ~/.Skype/Logs

It seems to work untill now....fingers crossed
Apparently Skype sometimes crashes when it cannot find the Logs folder.

Can anyone confirm that this works with LMDE?

We can now download and run Skype 4.0.0.8 from skype.com.
Works well so far for me.

(But we should find better (free) alternatives to skype soon)
