I have a linux mint 14 iso on my 16 gig thumb drive. How do i make it a bootable thumb drive now ? It's just one file on the drive but doesn't it have to be several files ??? The computer that i used and plan to put linuxmint 14 on is running Ubuntu

thanks,
Nate

You have to download the iso file to your computer and then use a disk creator to create a usb bootoble image

unetbootin is a good tool to make a bootable usb drive with an .iso.

If you are already running an installed mint or ubuntu use ImageWriter otherwise -

well, it looks like another one of those programs you have to really understand to get what you want done. Does this program actually install or just make a bootable disk or just copy files?

I don't know what to enter into the fields nor do i know what they are asking for?

Thanks,
Nate

Which program? Unetbootin is dead simple and available for both Windows and Linux (i.e. you can make the bootable USB from Windows, if you prefer).

I was talking about imagewriter. I have tried to use it and got nowhere .... about windows ... I'm really trying to not use it and so far it's not that hard to do .
I have made a bootable usb before but i'm lost this time i don't remember at all how to do it and I don't seem to be able to understand image writer.
Before , I used unetbootin but I don't remember how this time . That's what bothers me I can't seem to remember the things i've done before ... sigh

Unebootin - stupidly easy either from windows or linux
imageWritrer from mint stupidly easy

If you can tie your own laces you can use both of the above. ... Maybe not then!

IMAGE WRITER
Plug in a sutible usb stick - any format, empty or not.
start disks (or disk manager)- type disks in the search bar of the menu - find the device = /dev/sdd - yours may differ
Close disks.
Type image in the search bar - choose imagewriter (or USB imagewriter)

In the write image box (lhs)- find the required iso
In the other box (lhs) choose drive to write to.

Click write to device.

input password when required

DONE

On install use the something else option .
Please see http://usbtux.hostzi.com/How_to and specifically http://usbtux.hostzi.com/somethingelse Using the advanced install manager.

From "Something Else", instead of deleting the old partition(s) and adding new ones for Mint, just use the "Change" button at the bottom of the table to edit the existing partitions.

Click on a partition you want to replace and click "Change" a partition edit window will open. Leave all partition parameters the same, just click "Format the partition as..." and select your file system choice from the drop down menu. The partition will be formatted (overwriting the existing OS) and the selected Mint partition (root, /home, etc.) will be installed.

For Grub installation, either click on the drop down menu at the bottom of the partitioning page and select the location for Grub installation, or just leave this alone and take the default installation. The default is /dev/sda. This will install Mint's Grub in the mbr over any existing bootloader (Ubuntu Grub, Windows, etc.), and set up the dual boot menu automatically.

I'm not stupid and there really seems to be no reason to infer that.

I'm not trying to boot linux from my usb. I'm not in windows.

I'm trying to use a linux mint 14 ISO on a thumb drive to install linux mint 14 on my hard drive just as i would from a CD or DVD beside the windows xp that is already on it and also to erase the linux mint 13 that is already on the drive.
since i have already got linux mint 13 on the drive and using it there may be a better way to get 14 on the drive but i don't know it.

I'm trying to install linux mint 14 FROM the thumb drive ... NOT ONTO the thumb drive.

I hope i'm not making anyone mad but it seems that HELPING does not mean to infer anything at all at the HELPED.

THANKS,
Nate

Well my system is updated. You guys were a great help after I figured it out ...... I used unetbootin to make the
bootable thumb drive. But I had to use windows and that bothers me.
My Problem with "Imagewriter" is that I don't understand the display of the file system.
My file is in Downloads but when i typed in "Downloads" or "/Home/Downloads" or any other address or name it would just not list it so
I could not get it done.. and come to think about it I'm wondering now if I actually used the proper Case when i typed the addresses .... I will try that then come back later and let you know.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm . Maybe i'm not so smart . !

Thanks,
Nate

Yes case-sensitive mine is:
/home/orbmiser/Downloads showed path from nemo.
And orbmiser with lower case is what I setup account with.

I finally got mint 14 installed on the other computer, i'm using mint 13 here , I thought that i had posted that here. Somehow i think i post quite a bit. I must forget to submit.
You all helped quite a bit . I finally figured it out .

I had to go to windows to use unetbootin though and that bothers me in that it is possible in linux without having to rub elbows with microsoft. I just could not
and cannot still use unetbootin in linux. I I got it installed this afternoon on this computer but coulen't seem to write the address right in order to actually make a usb drive... I guess .... but tonight after actually getting mint 14 on the other computer I cannot even install unetbootin on the new install so i can't use it there yet.

Anyhow thanks for the help i got it done.

thanks,
Nate

I like Unebootin a lot but as far as I can see the Mint options only go up to 10. Do I install Unebootin on my thumb drive and then install Mint 14 separately?

you'll need to download a program like pendrive linux or unetbootin. They are easy and they will make the usb bootable. you will need to have the .iso in a spot NOT on the usb, and use the program to load it in a bootable manner.

Are you referring to the Unetbootin distribution presets? Those are not important, just leave it and choose disk image below, your distro not being a preset doesn't mean unetbootin can't burn the iso. I've done it literally about a hundred times without fail :)
