Memory usage comparison of MATE 1.4 vs Cinnamon 1.6

Post by malligt »

Disclaimer:

First let me say I am not an official testing laboratory....

Also please note that these are/were actual 32bit installations, not Live CD/DVD tests, and not virtual machines.

Legacy hardware: DELL Desktop GX-280, purchased November 2004. P4 processor with 2.5GB RAM and 40 GB hdd.

The first screen shot is Mint 13 Mate (v 1.4), and the second is Mint 14 Cinnamon (v 1.6.7). Screen shots were take at idle.

Many, if not all the reviews I've read recently seem to profess that Cinnamon has lower memory use, but this indicates the opposite.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Cinnamon is using more memory as it is falling back to LLVM (which also explains the 100% CPU usage), usually this memory would be taken from the video memory, and not regular RAM.

I also notice a difference in the Xorg:
MATE: Xorg 1.11.3
Ciinamon: Xorg 1.13.0

and this i notice also:
MATE: driver: Intel
Cinnmon: driver: Intel,Vesa

I think this is the reason of difference in memory usage too beside the LLVM fall back.
