No sound, alsamixer not working or detecting card.

Post by arctickangaroos »

Hi guys,

I am stuck. I have no sound, it is showing the dummy output. I have checked the speakers. Aplay shows no cards.

aplay: device_list:252: no soundcards found...

Alsa mixer cant open.

$ alsamixer
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory

I can see my onboard sound card and graphics sound cards via lscpi.

I have reinstalled alsa, but I cannot install the snd-hda-intel module. It says unknown symbol.

sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel
FATAL: Error inserting snd (/lib/modules/3.0.0-15-generic/kernel/sound/acore/snd.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
WARNING: Error running install command for snd
WARNING: Error inserting snd_pcm (/lib/modules/3.0.0-15-generic/kernel/sound/acore/snd-pcm.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
WARNING: Error inserting snd_hwdep (/lib/modules/3.0.0-15-generic/kernel/sound/acore/snd-hwdep.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
WARNING: Error inserting snd_hda_codec (/lib/modules/3.0.0-15-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-codec.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
FATAL: Error inserting snd_hda_intel (/lib/modules/3.0.0-15-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

At this point I am lost. I have spent hours and hours online reading and looking for a solution. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, I hope I'm not breaking rules by ressurecting a 4 month old thread.

Edit: I fixed it. Apparently, my user wasn't added to the audio group. I added it by running this command:

Code: Select all

$ sudo adduser xylon audio
Where 'xylon' is my username.

Hi - All,
When I upgreded to mint 14, I had NO sound....Though, mint 12 worked OK on HD audio in Windows.....running virtual box.....This time it wouldn't produce sound....So I changed to ICH AC97...Sound came through perfectly...
I have another problem, though.....When watching a program video or sound, after a while the screen goes blank....sound/picture continues but I can't see it?? I thought this would be a setting in appearances, but it's NOT? I've looked everywhere, can't seem to find that setting.
Great new mint 14 64bit....very fast and just WORKS!!!

Thanks for help / John in Dallas

I have often noticed this complaint about freshly installed Debian based distros.
The following procedure often works.

Left click on your sound applet.
Left click on "sound settings" and the Mixer window opens.
At bottom Left click on "Select Controls" and
select those controls you require.
***often installations come with none selected and that is the problem***
Close.
Adjust volumne levels.
Quit.
Test.
Hope this works for you.
If it works, please mark your question as [SOLVED].
