Wireless and bluetooth on Zotac ZBox AD12 with Mint Maya

Post by woccatozmmm »

I'm trying to connect using wifi but have got pretty lost. Searching this forum for Zbox Nano AD12 says that all terms are ignored as they're too common! Fair enough, so I'm posting my own topic. It's taken quite a while to get the wireless card recognised (still can't get the bluetooth recognised) but despite all the entries I've made in network connections and MAC address in the MAC filter on the brightbox I still have to connect to the network with ethernet. Where am I going wrong? I have run mintWifi and result is below.

You have 2 drivers installed, please remove the Windows one via Windows Wireless Drivers.
woccatozmmm wrote:all the entries I've made in network connections
You don't need to make any entries in there manually, they are created automatically when you click on a network in the tray icon list to connect. Please delete any connections under the Wireless tab you have created manually.

Thanks, I appreciate your response. As you say there was a windows driver and I've removed that. I then also deleted the wireless connection that I'd created. In the software that I have available with this install I can't find anything that can detect the router. I have just checked that the broadcast ssid is on!. Everything works fine on ethernet. I ran this sudo lshw -C network as it was asked for in a post on ubuntu forum.

So it says network disabled but I don't know where to look to enable it.

Playing with this problem still.
On start-up I get the message "waiting for network configuration" and then "waiting up to 60 seconds more" before it puts up the desktop. If I do this with the ethernet cable disconnected, I have to go into Network Connections, and on the "wired" tab I can Add and go in and select the ethernet MAC address from the drop down (as long as I've reconnected the cable!). That's a MAC address of the Realtek card in the PC. If I go to the tab "Wireless" there are no MAC addresses available from the drop down so presumably even with the driver installed I still have to find the line of code to run in the terminal to enable the card or edit something in Pluma. I did try a kernel up-grade to 3.6.x.x but the PC refused to boot and we had to back down from that.

Still playing with this. Annoyed that I'bve lost the instruction on how to manually blacklist a driver so it would appear from running lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net that I'm using ra2860 and not ra3290sta

03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Ralink corp. Device [1814:3290]
Subsystem: AzureWave Device [1a3b:2b87]

Subsystem: ZOTAC International (MCO) Ltd. Device [19da:8168]
Kernel driver in use: r8169

However, following the discovery that the network was disabled I managed to work out that the following command might do something to enable it sudo ifconfig ra0 up. Then ran sudo lshw -C network again
*-network

Oh look, It's describing it! I'm going to do a restart with the ethernet unplugged and see what happens. I'm still looking for the software that allowes me to scan for available wireless networks.

We may have done it! The final piece of the puzzle was to locate a piece of software that scanned for wireless networks. The Mint Maya 13 install we downloaded only had NetworkManager which looked like it was working but plainly wasn't for wireless. On software manager I searched for network manager and came up with wicd (another term that you won't be able to find in a search on this forum) and installed that. It runs and as long as I have an unsecured network I can connect. Not sure how to make sure I disable NetworkManager and as long as it doesn't interfere after a reboot I'll not bother looking.
If this all works in the long term I'll try to remember what I did, including the hunt for and installing the drivers, blacklisting by editing stuff in pluma, enabling the wireless card etc. Now how do I check that bluetooth is working as the control panel bluetooth software shows that I don't have any bluetooth present and I know it's there?

OK, so it only works on unencrypted wifi. Wicd needs some template written so that it doesn't get confused between passkey and preshared key and other things. wpa supplicant comes into it. At least i seems that more people have had this problem, many of the problems have been written about 3 years ago and I downloaded the package today with the same problems.

Ok, now it's getting more interesting. I have wpasupplicant installed. Is it a totally different package to wpa_supplicant which is referred to in the wicd.log?
