Mint 14 won't recognise Kindle Fire

Post by cbalmforth »

I've just bought a new Kindle Fire 2 with 10.2.1 firmware and I want to use it with the excellent Calibre software which I have been using with Mint and my old basic Kindles quite happily. But the Kindle Fire just doesn't show up on Mint as either a usb drive or a usb MTP device. I am now using Mint 14 (64) but the problem was the same on Mint 13(64).
lsusb gives:

Code: Select all

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0bda:0111 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Card Reader
Bus 001 Device 008: ID 1949:000a Lab126

where Lab126 is the Kindle Fire.

dmesg contains the following section:

which appears to show several attempts to connect.

What should I try next?

I don't have experience trying to connect to a kindle, but I can't connect to my phone via MTP. If you look for solutions on the internet with the search term 'ubuntu' instead of 'linux mint' you will get a lot more results.
Sorry I can't be more help, but I haven't had any luck with MTP on linux.

I also had this problem in the same sort of circumstances, my problem was more to do with getting personal videos onto the wifes Kindle.

I am running Mint 14 (32 bit) with Cinnamon and attaching to a Kindle Fire HD by USB.

The instructions on this http://itsfoss.com/how-to-connect-kindl ... ntu-12-10/ site helped me.

First I applied mtp-tools using Synaptic and then applied gmtp, again using Synaptic. I was then able to transfer the video files in gmtp which appeared under the Sound and Video section as gMTP.

Calibre can see the books on the device but I can't report that this sorts out Calibre as I had not tested Calibre for books before applying the above steps.

Good Info as have a Nook Color running CM7 Gingerbread from SD card. And could just turn on usb mode and fine. Now new Jellybean takes away Usb and gives less flexible MTP protocol. And one reason I've put off doing a Jellybean Roll to my Nook Color.

My Samsung Galaxy S2 with Jellybean (Leaked SAMSUNG ROM) actually does have USB mass storage. With the stock ICS ROM, there was only MTP or PTP (neither of which ever worked). It does default to MTP/PTP, and you have to go through menus to get to the mass storage, but it is there.

It also seems that the CM10 ROM for the kindle fire has mass storage but not enabled by default. I can't seem to find anything for the Nook Color in my limited search.
