Could not download all repository indexes.

Postby BangDROID on Thu Dec 06, 2012 2:42 am

I have had this error for several months, and have not been able to perform any updates also.

I have tried my best to solve this myself with google etc, but to no avail. I searched the Mint forums and found that several users have had similar problems, but none identical to mine, Also I didn't want to hi-jack anyone else's thread - after reading the forum rules.

When I start Update Manager, it begins to download the list etc, shortly after I get a Dialogue box containing the following:

Code: Select all
Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

I saw in another post someone suggested to enter inxi -r in a terminal and post the output. Here's the output from my machine:

If anyone has any ideas how to fix this and get my environment updated, I'd thoroughly appreciate it.
Cheers.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Delete existing corrupted downloaded list file :

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/*
sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/partial/*

and then apt-get update again

If the error happened again, it could be a network issue : your NIC or your cable for instance

rm: cannot remove `/var/lib/apt/lists/partial': Is a directory
second command appeared to work though.

sudo apt-get update returned:

I'm pretty sure it's not a network problem, as this happens on any connection, my own, my phone as a wifi hotspot, friends connection, public connections - anywhere. Been trying to update for months now.
Kind of alarmed by this Something wicked happened remark now though..

Edit:
Reloaded update manager and now it's reporting http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/natty/main/binary-amd64/Packages 404 Not Found as the only error. Hasn't listed any new updates yet.

The big issue was concerning MD5 checksum error. The question is : can you install something ? If yes, well, the situation is now OK.

You won't have any updates as Natty support is closed since Oct. 2012. (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/10/ubun ... ends-today)

The 404 error is normal, the file "Package" doesn't exists in ubuntu natty repo. It's not a big deal apt try to download either Packages or Packages.gz.

Thanks wavespot for your help. Yes I can install new packages now, so it seems that all is good.

In your opinion, would you think that having an unsupported version poses any major security vulnerabilities? This is primarily what concerns me.
It wouldn't also mean that every package is unsupported though, would it?
If so I would have to upgrade but that is kind of bit of a problem due to my dislike of the newer UI's available. And that I have not yet found a method of upgrading without losing tons of personalisation that make my environment functional to my needs.
