Is it possible to install KDE on Mint 14 without a reinstall

Postby hk-sigman on Wed Dec 05, 2012 6:35 pm

I see that the Mint 14 KDE RC is out now. I currently have Mint 14 Cinnamon installed and really don't want to reinstall from scratch again. Can I just install the KDE environment from the RC through the terminal?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

It isn't recommended. It's quicker to download and install Mint KDE and you get a much better system. Trying to install mint on top of cinnamon
will give you problems and you run a risk of borking them both. 8)

Yes. You can install as many DEs or WMs as you want without reinstalling.
To install KDE, open a terminal and type in "sudo apt-get install plasma-desktop"

After it's installed, logout and select KDE as your session and log in.

And BubbaBlues, I don't know where you got that idea from. I have KDE, LXDE, and Xfce on Debian Wheezy running, no problems ever.

Partly from here. viewtopic.php?f=109&t=118728#p655809
I guess I figure going from cinnamon to KDE is always an upgrade. Yes you can install kde on it, but it won't be Mint KDE.

What about upgrading from Mint 13 KDE 4.8 to the new one?

Is that possible?

It takes much longer and it isn't a good idea.

Upgrading is not recommended. You should backup important files then do a clean install..

i am triple booted with mint 13 kde and did a dist-upgrade from terminal and i am currently running kde 4.9.4.i wouldnt rush into installing the 14 kde rc just yet.its better to wait for the final as the rc is still in testing.just do a upgrade from the terminal.
