<SOLVED>Dual Install Nadia and Win8 - Mint boots, Win8 won't

Post by davamy »

I bought a new desktop from gateway and got windows 8 b/c that was the cheapest deal they had. I knew I would be running Nadia mostly anyways and so didn't care that much. Little did I know what a headache UEFI, Secure Boot, and Win8 would be trying to install Mint 14 - especially considering I am a newbie to linux. This forum was a huge help and I finally got it working with the new Mint 14.1 respins.

Only problem is that now Nadia boots right up and WIndows 8 won't. To be specific, I never even have the chance to select it. There are still a handful of programs I need to run on Windows (namely my tax software and some software to connect with my office's secure network). Anyway - I THOUGHT I installed the Mint bootloader to SDA6. Windows EFI boot partition seems to be SDA2.

Of course I didn't make a Windows Rescue disk first b/c - well, I just didn't.

Now I'm not sure what to do. I hope someone ought there smarter and more experienced than me can offer some help.

Here is the boot script info in case it helps. And thanks in advance for taking the time to look at this!

David

Re: Dual install of Nadia and Win8 - Nadia boots but not Win

Post by davamy »

Here's some followup info in case it's helpful. I burned a reFIND boot disk onto a CD and I can boot from the CD and it allows me to boot into either Windows 8 or Mint 14. Once inside windows I opened up EasyBCD 2.2 and retrieved the following from the bootloader.

Code: Select all

There are a total of 3 entries listed in the bootloader.

Default: Windows 8
Timeout: 30 seconds

I still can't boot into Windows 8 w/o the CD. Not sure what the next step to take is. I may install reFIND on the machine but I want to hold off on that for a little while - hoping that one of the forum members will have a tidier solution before I going mucking it up and do something I won't know how to recover from.

Thanks again for taking the time to read this.

Re: Dual install of Nadia and Win8 - Nadia boots but not Win

Alright, finally got this solved. I found a solution on the following web pages. I'm gonna mark this thread as solved. The following info is to help anyone else out who runs into the same problem.

http://superuser.com/questions/415198/m ... k-together
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/807801

The part I needed was:

Code: Select all

The GRUB menu can be unhidden by commenting out the two lines regarding GRUB_HIDDEN in /etc/default/grub and running update-grub as root.

Next, the entry for windows can be manually added by appending the following lines to /etc/grub.d/40_custom:
menuentry "Windows" {
    search --fs-uuid --no-floppy --set=root YOUR-EFI-PARTITIONS-UUID-HERE
    chainloader (${root})/efi/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi
}
run update-grub as root again.

Find your EFI partitions UUID by running 'ls -la /dev/disk/by-uuid/'. As the EFI partition is a FAT32 partition, the UUID is of the form XXXX-XXXX. If you have more than one FAT partition, you can verify if one is the EFI partition by checking the partition map with gdisk (not installed by default). Run gdisk on the device, 'sudo gdisk /dev/DEVICE', press 'p' to print the partition table, and then 'q' to quit. DON'T make any changes to the partition table. The EFI partition will have the code type 'EF00' and most likely a name/label that says it is a EFI system partition.

Thanks again,
David
