Hello all,
Sorry for the really stupid post. I recently got a new computer. It has linux mint. Anyway, when I first got it about a week ago, I set it up with only one account- mine- the admin account. So I am off of the computer for a week, and I go to log back in, and it says either wrong user name or wrong password. Eventually I reset my password via http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/339 .... So I know it isn't the password. I have tried everything for the username. I do not have an installation disk or anything to reinstall from. Any ideas how I could figure it out or reset it. If there's something I can go to in GRUB like how I reset the password, and you tell me the directions I could probably do it. Any help would be great!

Re: Forgot username?!
Boot from live session CD, Double click Home folder. find installed partition HD on left pane double click to mount and open. Double click home folder and see the username there.

I don't have the CD. I bought it as is from a store. Is there a way to see it in recovery or boot mode?

First question, how did you reset the password for a user account if you don't know the name of said user account?
Nevertheless, when you are in the password-less root shell where you used the passwd command, I'm assuming you have full command access. Can you not just navigate to your home directory, 'cd /home/' and then see what users have home directories via 'ls'? Just a thought.

I ended up adding another user when I booted up and just ended up using that username instead. Sure not entirely sure how I managed to forget my original username.
