I know I haven't been the only one complaining that the Window List applets didn't shrink as more windows opened, but instead pushed the Menu out of the way.
After reading up on the Cinnamon blog, I realised that this only happens when the applet is in the middle section of the panel. If you put it in the left hand side section then it works properly, even if it's on the right-hand end. It's still a bug, but a completely avoidable one.
I hope this might help others who were finding it as annoying as I was.
ETA
If your problem is that the Window List is centred, rather than left-aligned, then the same solution will fix the problem - if an item is in the middle section it will centre.

Re: Cinnamon Window List tip
Thanks Sally. This was literally driving me nuts. as soon as I open five items, the launchers and menu get squished. Pretty annoying. Was thinking of going to two panels, but this'll work, maybe.
Re: Cinnamon Window List tip
This should be fixed in the next Cinnamon release - window list shrinks properly no matter what panel/zone you have it in.
Re: Cinnamon Window List tip
I've seen various people complaining about this problem recently, so I hoped bumping this thread might help.

SOLUTION!
I wanted to test if this fix you mention actually worked for me too (Cinnamon 1.4) so I switched the panel to edit mode, moved the window-list furthest left, turned edit mode off, and it did work. I opened 10+ windows and only the actual windows were getting squeezed. The applet was not expanding to the right. I wouldnt want it like that so I just confirmed the solution was valid for me too. So I moved it the same way back to the original place, turned edit mode off and surprise surprise!
The applet does not resize any more! Strange huh? I also logged off and also restarted to be 100% sure it stays like that and it does! Did this work for anyone else?
Thanks SallyK!
