I am going to switch to OSSv4, mainly because I think my alsa driver for the Xonar DX is bad. I can try to keep pulseaudio around ; this way I would still use the volume control applet the way it currently is, i.e. a global pulseaudio volume.
But, I'm told pulseaudio's OSS support is suboptimal (went on the IRC channel for this), or I could want to go OSS-only for some reason.
Can the built-in volume control support OSS, or has someone ever thought of making an OSS volume control for the Mate or Gnome 2 panel?
I ran OSSv4 before, on ubuntu 10.04 with gnome 2, I used the OSS X mixer which is a standalone app but didn't integrate at all in the panel. Barring the inconvenience, this means someone using my PC won't easily find volume control either - and I run with an amplifier set at 80% to 100% volume, not a very powerful one but that easily gets LOUD sometimes.
Mate volume control for OSSv4?

Re: Mate volume control for OSSv4?
well switching to OSS was a failure, after messing with it (including making sure the kernel module actually builds) my card was "detected" but there was "no mixer" and no /dev/dsp.
so this thread is pointless. dunno if OSS is meant to not work, at least the build v2005 from mint 13/ubuntu 12.04 packages, or if it lies when it says it supports my card.
