LM13 64bit Cinnamon Tray Icons Freeze on AMD - ATI machine

Post by Aleksandar77 »

Hi to Linux Mint community :)

I installed LM13 64bit Cinnamon edition on my AMD-ATI computer on SSD disk. Installed proposed proprietary ATI drivers (not the post-release updates one but the proper one), and all works preaty good. It has some glitches and I'm reporting bugs each time the window pops-up, but all works well.

Here is the issue I can't get around and that prevents me to cross to LM13 permanent, I'm still using LM10 until bugs in LM13 are solved. My tray icons in Cinnamon bar are frozen from the point I login or start some app that uses tray icon space. Is not one app issue is almost all of them:

- pidgin icon
- skype icon
- update manager icon
- dropbox icon
- thunderbird FireTray icon

To be clear, I'll explain: All of those icons work in term of functionality, left/right mouse click all work fine, context menu text is ok, but icons themselfs do not change. Like pidgin tray icons stays 'offline' even if I go Online, Away or whatever and the other app icons behave the same. Update Manager icon stays 'Up to date' even if there is some updates, and Dropbox icon is fixed on 'Updating content' even if there is nothing to update.

On one or two occasions they seem to work for a minute or two but it never lasts, like update manager, dropbox and pidgin icon work fine and then I start Skype and all is frozen again. It makes no difference what apps are on, this is the case when no other app but Update Manager are there. Also I noticed that changing to some of cinnamon themes seems to get them refreshed and they seem to work fine for some time. Like change to ElementaryOS but if I start Skype after is fixed icons all over again.

Just want to point out that clock and Volume icon work fine, Volume icon changes on +/- volume change.

I'll be satisfied with any kind of solution here, don't mind chnaging Cinnamon theme or anything. Is really annoying not getting notices on tray when someone contacts you on skype or pidgin, and email icon not showing that new email is received.

Reverting back to the open source drivers fixes the issues for my AMD laptop and desktop. Sometimes changing the theme can also refresh the icons for a bit. It eventually reverts back to not updating though. Hope that helps.

Thanks for reply. Unfortunately that does not help in my case, with open source drivers my GPU fan wants to explode :)
Anyway I've switched to Mate now, cinnamon this way is unusable for me. Even do I have some Mate issues now, not same like this one will give it a try to get it working right.

I registered to bump this thread. I have the same issue on my similarly-configured system. In my case, I have icons for Skype, Pidgin, GMPC, and Claws-mail which stay at whatever state they were at when Cinnamon was started (or restarted). It's particularly annonying with claws-mail, which will perhaps always look like I have new mail (when I maybe don't) or look like I have no new messages (when I maybe do).

64-bit LM 14 with Cinnamon
"fglrx" drivers

Hope someone can find a workaround.

Thanks,
Eric

I did try that driver when I first installed, and couldn't get it working. I could try again, I guess. I'm currently using the andrikos PPA which shows (in CCC):

Code: Select all

Driver Packaging Version 9.00.11-120920a-147436C-ATI
2D Driver Version 9.0.2
Catalyst Control Center Version 2.17
RandR Version 1.3
...
OpenGL Version 4.2.11903 Compatibility Profile Context
I have his package fglrx installed, version "2:9.000-0ubuntu3+andrik4" but he also has "fglrx-updates" which is version 2:9.010-0ubuntu1~andrik7 at the moment.

OK, following ckk's directions I got the latest ATI beta drivers installed and working, sans watermark. It hasn't helped. System tray icons in the cinnamon panel are still static. In fact, it is slightly worse as the skype icon doesn't even show up now. It is either a black square or an artifact from whatever got scooted over to make room--usually the volume icon

CCC shows:

Code: Select all

Driver Packaging Version 9.01.8-121202a-150296E-ATI
2d Driver Version 9.1.11
CCC Version 2.18
RandR version 1.3
...
OpenGL Version 4.2.11995

Just an update for this issue. I was having two problems.

1. Tray icons did not update. (Skype always showed as online, Claws-mail always showed new mail, etc.) This seems to be fixed in the nightly release of cinnamon at https://launchpad.net/~gwendal-lebihan- ... on-nightly

2. Tray icons sometimes disappear. I traced this to activations of xscreensaver; after xscreensaver deactivated the icons were gone (but still functional: mouseover events and clicks worked). I believe only the GL/Mesa demos caused this and after disabling those demos I haven't noticed disappearing icons. Running full-screen games does not seem to have the same problem.

Ok now I'm back again. Installed LM14 - Cinnamon on same machine and same problem all over again. Really trying to stick to this release but not sure if that will be possible, my Skype, Pidgin and Thunderbird Mail icons on taskbar behave the same way like once before in LM13 - Cinnamon.
So now we have new LM14 and new ATI drivers and a same problem, new ATI drivers do not help the issue so is purely a Cinnamon problem.

@ayryq thank you for the update, I really hope that whan we get new Cinnamon updates, that are now in nightly build and that work for you this problem will be resolved.

Really anoying.

Your results may vary, but I have had absolutely no problems with the Cinnamon nightly. I'm not updating every day; I just did it once, and it fixed my problem.

I ran into all kinds of difficulty upgrading Nemo to the nightly (synaptic doesn't want to "force version" of two packages at once), but upgrading Nemo shouldn't be necessary for fixing the system tray.

Just noticed something that is really strange and that eluded me for past couple of days sense I installed LM14. Even do all icons on taskbar are frozen, and their state can be updated only by changing cinnamon theme, so they take current state correct and get frozen again, one icon seems to be immune. The Notifications Icon is updated without problem, each time i get new one is changed promptly. Quite strange that this icon and time are immune to this bug.

Not so strange. The issue is with the "system tray" applet; the clock and notification icons are part of other applets.

Still not working, I gave up on LM13 and now gave up LM14. Hope that one day this will be solved. I did try the new version but it didn't work for me still frozen.

Has anyone had any luck with this? I noticed that it might be related to 64bit LM14, cause on the 32bit it works like a charm.
Though I must admit, it is really annoying when you miss a whole lot of conversations due to the tray icons not updating.
I tried the nightly build of Cinnamon but that didn't fix it for me... and yes, whenever you reset the theme to something else, it fixes the bug for a second and then they freeze again. :(

I have this exact problem in Cinnamon. Tray icons not updating (ex. Radio Tray when turning on/off radios, Skype when receiving messages, login/logout etc). Also, some icons show up as squares with artifacts/corrupted image.

I have tested different versions of the AMD drivers, and with stable / nightly version of Cinnamon etc. Nothing seem to solve it. Therefore I'm running Xfce instead, since this problem does not exist there.

- Anyone know if there is a bug report submitted for this?
- Anyway to debug the issue?

Re: LM13 64bit Cinnamon Tray Icons Freeze on AMD - ATI machi

Post by ayryq »

Well, I originally posted that installing nightly Cinnamon fixed this. I ran into some other problems and reverted to the current Cinnamon (1.6.7) and found, weirdly, that it stayed fixed.

However, I recently updated my ATI (fglrx) drivers (among some other things) and now it's un-fixed. Back to the static icons. Nightly Cinnamon won't work today (no panel or window decorations) so I'm not sure if that would fix it, but for now I'm stuck.

Any help (still) appreciated.

I'm having the same issue under LMDE with fglrx.

I found out that Cinnamon bugs need to be submitted to GitHub, so I copied the bug report over to https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/1846.

Please update the bug report there. Let's get this one fixed guys.
