Postby Pcgames on Mon Dec 17, 2012 1:36 pm

My motherboard is having power up issues, so I am replacing it with

AMD A6-5400K http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... CatId=7182

MSI FM2-A75MA-E35 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813130662

Crucial Ballistix 4GB DDR3 1866 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820148559

I plan on using Mint 13 Cinnamon and I was wondering what you guys say about this setup, I have a cap of $150 btw

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

There is way too much AMD on your list for me to be comfortable with having an opinion on, but are you sure it is your motherboard that is defective? It often is the power supply, as that has to take the brunt of daily abuse in a computer.

Power supply is fine, I think its the capacitors which is what this board is prone to failing. Besides its got AMD's Athlon 64 2100+ with geforce 6100 graphics. I think a upgrade wouldn't hurt lol and the other option is an i3 maybe

Do your case like this one : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague
you can try change the capacitor first. Sometime that's works.

for $150 ,Maybe :
Dual core Intel Pentium Sandybridge ( core i3 is better option ), Intel/MSI LGA 1155 board and 4 GB DDR3 RAM
If you don't use 3d , i think intel graphic is the best option for linux.

My main system is :
Code: Select all
Kernel: 3.5.0-17-generic i686 (32 bit) Desktop: Gnome Distro: Linux Mint 14 Nadia
Machine:   Mobo: Gigabyte model: G41MT-S2PT version: x.x Bios: Award version: FA date: 08/03/2011
CPU:       Dual core Pentium CPU E5700 (-MCP-) cache: 2048 KB flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 ssse3 vmx)
           Clock Speeds: 1: 1200.00 MHz 2: 1200.00 MHz
Graphics:  Card: Intel 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller
           X.Org: 1.13.0 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) Resolution: 1024x768@85.0hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel G41 x86/MMX/SSE2 GLX Version: 2.1 Mesa 9.0
Audio:     Card: Intel NM10/ICH7 Family High Definition Audio Controller driver: snd_hda_intel Sound: ALSA ver: 1.0.25

LM14 cinnamon work's fine.( i didn't play games anymore )

I will run some games like the new simcity if I can get a dual boot working with my old winders xp, having no money for upgrades pushed me into pocket gaming. Plus the AMD's price is more enticing.

I know the intel is a better cpu but I don't encode often (rarely) and mostly surf the web and watch youtube. I run two old AMD's both with old Nvidia graphics, so how bad can new drivers really be?
