How to select MATE as the desktop manager?
I am a little bit confused:
I cite from http://www.linuxmint.com/download_lmde.php
"It is available in both 32 and 64-bit as a live DVD and features a Gnome and an Xfce edition."
Some lines before:
"Download mirrors: MATE/Cinnamon: [32-bit] [64-bit]"
It is this version that I downloaded and installed. But I have never been asked whether I wanted to have MATE or Cinnamon. So I do not know what kind of surface I have (forgive me, I am a newbie).
MATE is Gnome 2 and will stay Gnome 2, right?
Cinnamon is Gnome 3 and will stay Gnome 3, right?
Are there other desktop environments possible, for example, the leightweight LXDE? (My machine is old.)
Greetings, thanks for your work,
S.

Re: What window manager/deskop environment does LMDE use?
Yes, MATE is based on gtk2 like the old Gnome 2, and Cinnamon is based on gtk3 like Gnome 3.
At the login screen you can choose either MATE or Cinnamon for that session.
It is possible to install other desktops such as LXDE or KDE if you desire. You would then be able to select that desktop session at the login screen.

Mint Cinnamon 20.1
Re: What window manager/deskop environment does LMDE use?
No, I have just logged out, even rebooted, but the login screen gives me no possibility to choose between MATE or Cinnamon!?
All I get is the choice between "Gnome/Gnome (recovery mode".
I still do not know what desktop environment I actually have...

Re: How to select MATE as the desktop manager?
Seems that no one has an answer, or too few people read this thread, so I felt free to change the overall title of the thread.
I guess, my desktop is Cinnamon, but how can I be sure? And I really have no choice on login to change to MATE. The only option is "Gnome", which means everything and nothing...

Re: How to select MATE as the desktop manager?
that is odd
my best bet is that you installed an older iso of lmde (one that only has gnome, but that would mean 201109 the 3rd option in this list)
we can have a rough idea how old is the iso if you run this command

mint 10 is obsolete since last april http://www.linuxmint.com/oldreleases.php (it won't get any updates, the servers are closed, you can't install any new app)System: Host MeinNC10-Debian Kernel 2.6.35-22-generic i686 (32 bit) Distro Linux Mint 10 Julia
Re: How to select MATE as the desktop manager?
OK, I''ll go again through all the steps described on
http://www.linuxmint.com/download_lmde.php
This means downlaoding from
http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=99
But what do you mean by "mint 10 is obsolete since last april"? isn't LMDE a rolling release, so that the point of time you start in does not matter? Seems that have not fully understood what a rolling release really is.
