I just discovered Ctrl+Alt+F1 to put me in console mode.
Is it possible to get back without rebooting or losing any of the apps I had running?
What is the simplest way?

Try Ctrl+Alt+F7.

Hm, on my machines, I have to use <Alt><F8> in most cases in order to get back to the X Windows GUI. <Alt><F7> usually just displays a black blank screen. So at least it is worth trying <Alt><F7>. And if this does not take you back to the GUI, try <Alt><F8>.
