Although Ubuntu and Mint are not the same distribution, they're compatible. This means Mint can use all Ubuntu packages and Ubuntu can use all Mint packages. Of course all mint additions are not in the form of a package so you can't upgrade from Ubuntu to Mint. However Ubuntu users can install mint applications and packages like mintDisk for instance on their system and it should work just fine.

We're taking Ubuntu as a base to make a great yet different distribution. If Ubuntu think our innovations can make their distribution better, then we'd be glad to help and see them packaged by default in Ubuntu repos.

There has been a lot of bad feelings between Debian and Ubuntu users and a lot of people didn't see the opportunity for both distributions to learn and benefit from each others. We are taking advantage of Ubuntu a lot and we do hope Ubuntu will in return take advantage of the work we're doing to improve their distributions.

Well it is one our key strengh.. we can collect feedback on a product, make a decision and release a new version of that product in a matter of hours. This is thanks to the fact that we are 100% independent in the choices we make. Of course I understand what you say and there is pros and cons to being a flavor of Ubuntu rather than a separate distribution.
