No sound Mint 14 on Eee PC 1015BX
Just installed Mint 14 MATE on Eee PC 1015BX. A lot of problems. Managed to solve the problem with no wireless and hanging boot (think due to the EDI problem), but got stuck with sound.
I think I dont have drivers at all (dont know which ones though - graphical card or sound)?.
When I go to Control Center > Sound, i get the following output:
1) the Hardware tab - empty. There is nothing there.
2) the Output tab - Dummy output, Stereo.
Thats it. What shall I do?
Any help will be appreciated. I spent already almost 2 weeks trying to fine-tune Mint 14 on my machine. I am about to give up and install Windows XP.

Re: No sound Mint 14 on Eee PC 1015BX
You have 2 sound devices
Of course one may work better than the other
Azalia rings alarm bells to me for some reason? But I could be wrong.
If you are new to linux it can be a little confusing just setting this up in the Mixer etc..
You need to decide which one to use as the primary sound deviceAudio: Card-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Wrestler HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6250/6310]
Card-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)

Re: No sound Mint 14 on Eee PC 1015BX
I will choose the first one. Now the question is what to do next?
I am not new to Linux. I am not a programmer but I can figure things out most of the time. I successfully installed Linux in the past on 3 computers, on two of them Linux was running parallel to Windows. I needed to do some tweaking, but not like this time. I am busy for almost two weeks now. Virtually nothing is working out of the box. I am a bit fed up with it. It seems Eee PC 1015BX hardware is not supported at all in Mint. I already tried to install Mint 9, Mint 11, 12, 13 and came back to Mint 14. The same problems in every version.
Anyway, please help me to proceed. What do I need to install and how? My external wired keyboard also does not work. I assume it is also a part of no graphic card driver problem or whatever it is.
My problems is that before you get a right answer you need to ask a right question. But if nothing is present in the system I dont know where to start and what is missing.
And thanks for your reply.

Re: No sound Mint 14 on Eee PC 1015BX
to see codec chip in use :
check if audio driver module for your soundchip loaded :
you can try force your model in alsa-base.conf:
add line :
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop
or
options snd-hda-intel model=eeepc
or
options snd-hda-intel model=eeepc-1015
save.
after that reload ALSA:
or reboot
Maybe you can try install fglrx from software source > additional drivers
Code: Select all
aplay -l
Code: Select all
lsmod |grep snd
Code: Select all
gksu pluma /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop
or
options snd-hda-intel model=eeepc
or
options snd-hda-intel model=eeepc-1015
save.
after that reload ALSA:
Code: Select all
sudo alsa force-reload

Re: No sound Mint 14 on Eee PC 1015BX
look like no sound module loaded ( snd_hda_intel or snd_hda_codec ), i don't know what is wrong.
Maybe you can try add acpi_osi=Linux to boot parameter:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
change to :
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux"
save it. execute :
reboot. After that run lsmod again.
Maybe you can try add acpi_osi=Linux to boot parameter:
Code: Select all

Re: No sound Mint 14 on Eee PC 1015BX
I have already tweaked with grub a few days ago.
I had a problem of no boot when starting up the computer (it was a recurring problem with all operating systems I installed). The screen will light up (but still stay black) and a horizontal cursor will pop up, but no boot will start. The computer will freeze like this forever. I needed to hard reboot it and try to boot from the installation USB, then reboot in a normal way, and most of the time the boot will start. Sometimes I needed to unplug the power cable, remove the battery, press the start button for 30 sec to discharge static electricity, then plug the power cable again and the boot will start. It was lasting for 2 weeks until I can across a post at the link:
http://peppermintos.net/viewtopic.php?f ... a&start=10
What I did was described in the second post on the page:
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=" vga=769"
delete the " comments " (in 2 lines) and change to:
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
in terminal enter:
sudo update-grub
so it looks like startup-manager upsets the nvidia drivers when it places splash commands
(that nvidia don't like?)
I did it and the booting was OK after that. Sometimes I still need to remove a power cable in order to boot. At least those instances are much less than before.
But now it seems I cannot adit the grub file. What to do?

so it looks like startup-manager upsets the nvidia drivers when it places splash commands
(that nvidia don't like?)
I did it and the booting was OK after that. Sometimes I still need to remove a power cable in order to boot. At least those instances are much less than before.
But now it seems I cannot adit the grub file. What to do?
