Kernel 3.5.0-21 and Shutdown(Solved)

Postby viking777 on Sat Dec 22, 2012 8:03 am

Since I installed kernel 3.5.0-21-generic (64 bit) on Mint Nadia about 4 days ago, I have been unable to shut down my computer. If I hit the 'shutdown' button or invoke shutdown from the command line the machine just reboots, it doesn't shut down. The problem also occurs in Ubuntu with the same kernel (though there it does occasionally shut down correctly, in Mint it never does). If I revert back to kernel 3.5.0-19 on either distro the computer shuts down properly every time.

There are no shutdown error messages (I don't run a splash screen so I can read them) the shutdown sequence is perfectly normal, but always ends in a reboot.

Anyone else with this problem or information about it (I haven't found any yet).

EDIT. Correction I found a similar though not identical report here:

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48311

It seems it is affecting only efi booted machines which is probably why there are so few reports.

Thanks for the heads up Xsabre it looks like this is a kernel regression affecting uefi users. It is being looked at by some highly knowledgeable individuals (so not me  ) but no solution has come to light as yet. I will post back here when I hear anything.

I have seen this type of problem reported before, and usually the 'fix' is to continue using the older kernel until the next general update. I assume you are talking about shutting down from the terminal with sudo shutdown now

Personally it affects me whatever way I shut down, cli or dialogue box or even from the login screen.

As for waiting for the next kernel that may be a long wait, I have tested various versions of kernels 3.5, 3.6, and 3.7 on multiple distributions and they are all affected with the same bug.

Hopefully you are afflicted by a genuine, acknowledged bug. If so, the developers will work on the code and actually fix it. If you are afflicted by a 'feature change', your bug may never be acknowledged and you may be stuck with work-arounds. For example, my previous desktop system did not support Compiz at all and crashed even with fall-back versions of Unity, forcing me to drop Ubuntu for Debian and Mint. Went 2 years with that system and that bug, never acknowledged, never fixed.

I have now posted a bug report about this on the linuxmint bug tracker as it appears not to have been reported before.

Have you been reading this thread? http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=189&t=120833

If you have any external drives mounted, @on4aa suggests that there is a problem shutting down without running the umount -a command in a terminal window. If this works, the thread gives information to add it to your default shutdown instructions.

Thanks for that cwsnyder, but I don't think it is the problem. Firstly that information is for LMDE and I am using Mint Main, secondly it refers to network drives and I don't have any and thirdly I don't have any folder called /etc/gdm3 so I can't edit anything inside it. Thanks for looking it up though.

I can help you with any modifications to work with LM Nadia 64-bit, if the code actually allows shutdown to work:
Code: Select all
sudo umount -a
sudo shutdown now
If it doesn't, no harm, no foul. I have been doing quite a bit of experimenting because of my video problems with modifying startup and shutdown scripts in GDM, LightDM, and MDM.

Thanks for the suggestion cwsnyder, I gave it a try, but no luck, it just rebooted again as before.

Just a thought: have you tried tweaking your S3/hibernation/power saving options in the motherboard BIOS? In my experience sometimes those options can interfere with shutdown/reboot. May be worth a try at any rate. If you have a setting that is atypical, then that may be of special interest. You have a very powerful system by the way. Did you mention your motherboard model in the bug report?

Thanks for the reply igor, but if that were the problem I think it would affect all kernels, and not just the latest one as it does now. This change has only occurred since kernel 3.5.0-21 all earlier kernels shutdown normally.

Postby viking777 on Mon Jan 14, 2013 12:12 pm

Well after a lot of trying I have finally found a workround for this problem. I thought it was a Uefi problem, but it isn't, it is something to do with my external hard drive in relation to kernels newer than 3.5.0-19. I will describe it here in case anyone else is unlucky enough to be afflicted by it.

When my external usb hard drive is plugged in to a - built in - usb3 port on kernels newer than 3.5.0-19 my laptop will not shut down - it permanently reboots unless you hold down the power key.

However I have an express card slot on this laptop, and this slot contains a usb3 expansion card. If I plug the external hard drive into one of the two slots on the expansion card, the laptop shuts down normally whichever kernel I am using.

I know it sounds weird, but believe me it is true!

Of course I am lucky in having this Express Card slot, they seem to have fallen out of fashion just recently, if you don't have such an option then the only way to make the machine shutdown is to use an older kernel or to unplug the external hard drive before you want to shut down.

My problem is that the system completes the shutdown process but power is not switched off. Suspend also has issues. If I suspend the system it appears to but there is no way to bring it back. (No keyboard, mouse movement, or power switch can take it out of suspend. Hard reboot is the only thing.)

That would be valuable info for the kernel developers, I would think. As the Linux community is on the verge of ushering in new Ubuntu and OpenSuse in a matter of months, it might be a good idea to send a bug report, in the hope it might get fixed before the next generation of Linux Mint. Open Suse 12.3 is out in April, and I think ubuntu 13.04 in March is it? I forget. I have not decided which to try. Oh wait, I have. With Ubuntu, I always wait for Linux Mint. :D So I may try Open Suse KDE depending on the reviews...I hear that KDE 4.10 is in their beta...
