Some Repositories for Mint 10 Julia No Longer Working ?

Post by velky_pivo »

I have a Gnome installation of Mint Julia, and until recently I was able to use software manager and update manager.
Now, sw will not install, and updates manager shows a message that some repositories do not work, I get :

Could not download all repository indexes

Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

What happened, and is there anything I can do to be able to use sw and update managers ?

Thanks

Linux Mint 10 Julia has been obsoleted as of April this year, and has thus reached end-of-support (as reported here on the blog, http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1974). The same goes for Ubuntu Maverick on which it is based, and as time goes by more and more repositories will be demolished. If you want to continue to receive security updates and be able to install new software, you are recommend to install Linux Mint 13 Maya or Linux Mint 14 Nadia. Maya is supported till April 2017, and is the current long-term support release. Linux Mint 14 is the latest release, with support till April 2014. You can download either release from here: http://www.linuxmint.com/oldreleases.php.

Today even the system update icon has disappeared.
I was aware of the support deadline but things were working till about Dec 31.
So the server space is being reclaimed for support of newer stuff, I guess; it makes sense.

Is it safe to keep running Julia for a while longer ?

It has not been safe to run Julia since April 2012, as you are since that month not getting fixes for newly found security issues in the programs you use. You can keep using it, but it is highly recommended you upgrade for that reason alone. Should you run into other issues, like some new program or new hardware device or peripheral not working correctly after installing, the first thing you'll be told on the forum is to upgrade to a newer release
