Broadcom Wireless Problem

Post by Will2Kill »

Hello, I have a problem with Broadcom wireless card
Network controller : Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller (rev 01)
I am using Linux Mint 14 with Linux 3.5.0-21-generic (x86_64)

Now when I first used the netbook I looked at the Software Sources, mostly wanting to see if there were any drivers for my graphics card, and saw that my wireless device, having two choices.
1. Using Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver source from bcmwl-kernel-source (proprietary)
2. Do not use the device
The second choice was preselected.

Before that I had used my network manager and I was able to scan for wireless networks. I didn't touch the drivers choice because I thought it was working. I even made a successful WEP attack on a friend's wireless network with it.
When I tried connecting, first to an unsecure network and later to my own wireless it couldn't connect.
On the unsecure network it kept trying to connect, without failing or succeding. On my wireless it wouldn't accept my password no matter what encryption I chose, it was WPA but I'm not sure what "variety?" it was. A Windows 8 laptop connected without a problem with the same password.

I decided to use the proprietary driver but that resulted in being unable to even scan for networks. I then removed the proprietary drivers in hopes I could at least scan for networks but I was unable to do even that.

Tell me what infromation you need me to provide.

For the BCM4313 you need the brcmsmac driver, which is included in the Linux kernel as a loadable module. Here's me checking it is there:

Code: Select all

vincent@nadia ~ $ modinfo brcmsmac
filename: /lib/modules/3.5.0-21-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/brcm80211/brcmsmac/brcmsmac.ko
license: Dual BSD/GPL
description: Broadcom 802.11n wireless LAN driver.
author: Broadcom Corporation
srcversion: 81190C9B86BA0E445FE8CCD
alias: bcma:m04BFid0812rev18cl*
alias: bcma:m04BFid0812rev17cl*
depends: mac80211,bcma,brcmutil,cfg80211,cordic
intree: Y
vermagic: 3.5.0-21-generic SMP mod_unload modversions
Suggest you run the following command to remove any remnants of the driver you installed:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge broadcom-sta-* bcmwl-kernel-source
then try to load the needed module:

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe brcmfmac
then check to see if it is loaded (or if you got an error, share that here instead):

Code: Select all

lsmod | grep brc
If needed, I got most of this from these two websites http://askubuntu.com/questions/12355/ho ... 7806#67806 and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiD ... er/bcm43xx.

What about broadcom-wl/sta?

Broadcom has elected to create their own proprietary driver for Linux. This is possibly due to various portable computer manufacturers like Dell including Broadcom's wireless chipsets in their devices. Also, many users/owners have expressed concerns and the pain of using ndiswrapper to use b43 so the driver was created to alleviate such issues.

However, broadcom-wl does not support some things that b43/b43legacy does. broadcom-wl can only offer connection to AP or Ad-Hoc networks, it does not offer AP modes and Monitor modes. Furthermore, the driver does not cooperate well with iw tools because it has its own ieee80211 stack. This stack is both outdated and does not work with the mac80211 stack which b43/b43legacy is based on.

Thanks that did correct the immediate problem but i still can't connect to any sort of network.
I tried just a while ago. It stuck for a few minutes with an "Obtaining IP" message and ended with a message that it can't gain an IP or something along those lines.

Hmm. Can you copy the section about your BCM4313 Wireless from the following command?

Code: Select all

sudo lspci -vv

Re: Broadcom Wireless Problem

It displays the help info of the command.
How do I check for the specific device?

It was sudo lspci -vv not --vv.
Here's the ful output.

Reason: Replace quote with code tag, and split the wireless part from the rest of the output.

Re: Broadcom Wireless Problem

Post by Will2Kill »

There has been some progress.

It started when there was a problem with the network manager(wicd though I don't thnk it's important). I Switched Off all wireless activity from the manager and later on reboot for unrelated reasons. When I logged back in I tried to restart Wireless activity but the system crashed. After rebooting and the crash happening again I typed the ifconfig wlan0 down comand just in case, I had noticed it was very reguralry the go to solution when something about the wireless card not working.

Not only starting the Wireless worked but I could finally connect to wireless networks without a problem.

If I'm not mistaken ifconfig down stops the driver, so the problem probably has to do with that. However it is a temporary solution because everytime I put my laptop in suspension I have to do it all over.

Is there a more permanent solution?

Please note this is a clean build of Mint 14.1 with Cinnamon (64BIT).

Okay, so my wireless worked from the get-go (Yeah, I know.. a total shocker right?)

BUT.. The weird part is that my Wireless indicator light (above the keyboard) on this Dell Latitude does not "light up". There is a hardware switch to enable/disable wireless and that works just fine; but the light never comes on!

I am NOT experiencing the Wireless Network problems that others are talking about... just this issue with the light... thought I should document it.

I have NOT altered the configuration from the clean install that I performed yesterday, I simply ran all of the updates following that.. the light issue has existed from the beginning.

I should note that of the Linux Distributions that I have tested in the past 72-hours, this version of Mint is the only one that the wireless actually WORKED from the initial build with no modifications; but I would like to get the light issue fixed... unless doing so would hose up wireless functionality, in which case I can live without the light.. lol :)

72-Hours of Testing Includes:
Ubuntu 12.10 i386
Fedora 18 x86-64
Debian 6.0.6 AMD64-I386
OpenSuse 12.3 Beta 1 Build 0348 x86-64
Ubuntu 13.04 (Nightly 1-26-13) 64bit

Hello, I have a similar problem in my laptop, I changed from OpenSuse, to Ubuntu, and now, to LinuxMint, but the problem seems to persist.
Here is the output of lspci command:
