cd to the directory (I create a folder named wine)
then run

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i *.deb
If you run into any errors run

Code: Select all

apt-get -f install
It helps to make sure you have a debian unstable/sid repo in your sources.list
something along the lines of:
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free

Of course you can use a different mirror, what ever works best for you.

If you are running LMDE tracking Debian Stable your safest bet would be to use the Mepis8.5 repo rather than the above steps.

libwine-unstable
libwine-bin-unstable
wine-bin-unstable

Put the downloaded packages together in a folder. Right-click on the folder icon and select Open Terminal Here, then in the terminal, enter:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i *.deb
Deciding which other packages to install will depend on what facilities you want available in Wine. For example, if you want audio, install libwine-alsa-unstable, and so on.
sounds easy enough..thanks :D

The reason there is no official wine in Mint is that it was removed from Debian testing part way through 2011 and hasn't been re-added since.

This was due to build problems due to unsatisfied build dependencies or something. Wine support in Debian has been "troubled" for years now, either packaging an ancient version or removing it altogether. They are simply having problems building it "properly, the Debian way" for newer versions. There was a big debate about it before Squeeze was released with some favouring removing it altogether, well it didn't happen then but it looks like it happened about a year later.

You can keep track of what's going on here: http://packages.qa.debian.org/w/wine.html

In the meantime, you'll need to go elsewhere for wine - either to winehq's beta versions for Debian unstable: http://www.winehq.org/download/debian
(these are likely to break, and may not be patched)

Or to lamaresh's repository for Debian: http://www.lamaresh.net/
Maintained, though probably not to Debian's high standards.

Or get wine from Debian unstable. But keep in mind this is an ancient, and possibly broken (read the above package QA page) version which may even pull in a bunch of other stuff from Debian unstable that you didn't want.

There is also a wine-unstable package in Debian unstable but it comes with the same warnings from me. And it's a similar version to the one you'll get from lamaresh's repository, which is probably safer on a relative scale.

This tutorial should also work with (from WineHQ suggested) carbon-project.org: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=197&t=99465

Here is a detailed recipe that has always worked for me: http://lxlinux.com/debian.html . See [7]. Replace 64-bit packages with ones labeled 32-bit if that is your system.
