Mint 14.1 Cinnamon stuck at Install "Where are you?" screen.

Post by roboiii »

I've searched these forums and the rest of the internet for solutions to this problem. Previously I had Ubuntu 12.04, Mint 13 and Windows 7 booting from this machine with no problem. Update to Mint 14 and nothing but problems. LiveCD boots fine. Install hangs at the Install "Where are you?" screen where you choose your location for time purposes. It's really frustrating that Windows 7 installs with no issues on the same machine yet Linux Mint can't. Suppose if I can't get this working I'll give Ubuntu a whirl again. Just wish things would work without so much hassle. Put this machine together around 2008 and the hardware was pretty decent at the time. I had been trying to install to sdc and am now attempting to install to the old Ubuntu partition on sdb which resides alongside win7.

So no one needs to ask:
1. I've checked md5s and integrity.
2. I slow burned the disk.
3. I ran the "sudo apt-get remove ubiquity-slideshow-mint" command prior to running the install program.
4. I've got four hard drives. The one specified as the main boot drive is the 1GB drive that has Win7 installed.

I'm having the same hanging problem. I was getting an "erno 5" message, set up a fresh boot stick, now the installer is making it to the where are you page and hanging. I'm currently running windows 7 and trying to install mint 14.1 64 bit along side it.

It does seem as if it's installed but I don't have a user account. I lost my boot record and had to use the live CD to run a program called boot repair to recover grub. I'm wondering if there's a way to use the live cd and create a user account for the install?

I have the exact same problem and have been trying to intall for days!! I am going to run md5sum to figure out if I have a bad install disk. I can't install and I am super excited to get to learn more about mint and start trying it

Why won't anyone help us? The funny thing is that I have similar specs on my computer, I am running an asus board and I am trying to install the 64 bit version of mint, I wonder if I should just switch to the 32 bit version and try again? Will it be that much worse?

Do you guys think it might be because we are using 64 bit? I was checking online and I found some stuff about eventual problems....

I have an ASUS P8768 board with an i5 intel 3.3 ghz computer with 8 gigs of ram. Should I be running into trouble?

After trying to install probably 10 times i figured it out with the help of linuxmint chat!!

Okay basically the best way to install linux mint is from a flash disk(usb or external hard drive) you need to get a program that will write the image onto the drive but this will erase the whole drive so make sure you back up first!

After that just install it was easy and painless....Dont use cds anymore because chances are they wont work!

Peace!!!

Ok. I eventually did get Ubuntu to intall. I took a few steps so I'm not sure exactly which was the winner. First was to remove one of the two video card, which were connected in crossfire. Two was to change the Bios from IDE to AHCI detection. Three was to use the Boot Repair program as apparently I had a mess between different types of grub installed amongst my many hard drives. Hope this helps for Mint as well.

When I ran into this problem (multiple times, multiple systems) I had to use gparted to completely wipe the disk and delete existing partitions.
After that it worked fine.
