Earlier on today I installed Mint 13 XFCE and even though everything seems to be working well, one thing I have noticed is that my HDD(I'm assuming its from that) has been making a tick noise about every 30 seconds. It never use to do that with Windows so I don't know why it would do this now.
Is this sound normal? It's not really loud but it is loud enough that it caught my attention. Could I have possibly messed something up on my HDD or in my netbook in general? Could it be that I have too many/not enough partitions? Or maybe it's normal?

Re: Ticking noise since installation
I can't remember if I heard that noise before I added accounts to Thunderbird because aside from installing Gparted, that is the only thing I added after installing Mint. I'm going to remove those accounts to see if there is any change. If not then I'll have no choice but to remove Mint. I might give the version you use a try and if it still happens, I'll go back to Windows as much as I don't want to. Even though my netbook is under warranty, the last thing I want is for it to break down on me.

Like I said
Mint Mate 13 or 14 - No ticking

Re: Ticking noise since installation
Is this a real "tick" or a regular quick read/write opperation? I have an open frame computer so I can hear my HDD quite well. I think all operating systems do regular system updates. Maybe this is just something you notice different than the normal operation of Windows. My HDD when sitting at a bare desktop will will make a very quick "tick" every few seconds. But, I know this is a normal R/W opp.
Re: Ticking noise since installation
I had some sort of ticking noise after installing Ubuntu. I never could figure out what is was. Till i discovered that it was triggered by my mouse for some unknown reason. Unplugging and plugging in my mouse didn't solved the problem. Neither did rebooting my system solve the problem. And then i installed another distro (fully clean and fresh installation btw.) and that clicking or ticking sounds never came back. I think it had something to do with the mouse together with Ubuntu and some powermanagement packages or ACPI packages... Never really found out why.
But sometimes my harddrive makes a noise too. I think this is some read/write operation of Linux itself. Temporarily swap on the drive??
