Nautilus is broken.

Post by fowlmout »

Hello folks. It is with sad news that I come to you today. You see, something horrible has happened to our dear friend Nautilus. He's having problems opening files like a good boy. When I download something through Chromium, Firefox, etc and try to open it from the browser I get an error like such:

How can this be? Has Nautilus really forgotten his base duties as a file manager? All I can really do with Nautilus from the outside seems to be `nautilus /some/dir`. This is interfering with the natural order of things. Running `thunar /some/pic.jpg` does what is expected, so does `dolphin /some/pic.jpg` AND THUS when I switched to Thunar using this script (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DefaultFileManager) and tried to open a download from Chrome, it worked like a charm. A completely sane, totally expected, charm.

Why don't I just use Thunar then if it's so special?! It's not actually that special, and that's the wrong way to go about solving problems. Thunar behaves nicely, good little software. I've been to #gnome, #linuxmint-help, etc and nobody has any clue what's wrong with little old Nautilus. I just want my friend back, you see, and I have nowhere left to turn. I've been told things like "Nautilus can only open directories" (as if it's not a file manager, derp?) Why, Nautilus, why must you continue to play games with my heart!

Mint/Katya/GNOME

Please tell me someone else has had this problem before. Just someone to identify with, to let me know I'm not all alone in this world.. Thank you.

no, you are alone, if you do a google search for "the location is not a folder" you would be amazed with the amount of results
http://www.google.co.uk/search?source=i ... 1.7.2l10l0
i just read a couple, but i think this one http://queleimporta.com/thunar-nautilus ... der-gnome/ may be useful

I noticed that the folders on my system which are causing this error ended with a 'blank' at the end of the folder name. After simply deleting the last blank from the folder's name, everything worked fine. It seems additonally more related to thunar (if this is used in XBMC) than to Nautilus, where at least on my Ubuntu-systems with pure Nautilus this never happened. So, maybe this idea of mine can prevent somebody from uninstalling things, but rather checking if their folder- or filename ends with a blank.
