Install Apps we only want in the Live CD?

Post by Orbmiser »

Seems no distro I have tried out has gotten it right for me.
When it comes to installed apps.

Am appreciative of distro creators taking the time to test and roll-up apps for installation.
And no Big Issue! But?

Is there some reason it can't be a opt-in click check-mark to install the apps we want?
And bypass and ignore installing apps we are not interested in?

Just a thought? And don't know enough of the details to make this a viable option for all Distro's?

You can always install a minimal OS like arch and then you alone are responsible for installing the apps you want. Including the desktop. Or I think mint is also available in a minimalistic version. I mean the one without codecs and stuff. I may be wrong.

That thought pops up from time to time, and it is an understandable one if you are equipped to make such choices. Linux Mint aims to be usable by non-technical users, Linux newbies, and more experienced users all. The first two groups may now know, or care, about the difference between, for example, the various web browsers you can install. So how would they choose what to install or not? Even offering a choice with defaults set will likely scare some new users away. So Linux Mint tries to have one sensible application per task, which is installed by default but can easily be replaced by a more experienced user. Also, the current installer does not have support for offering such choices and I think it was looked into before but was not an easy task to add on.
