Linuxmint14 Nadia freezes

Post by wamni »

After xx number of minutes my screen will freeze and there is no curser action, key presses that will reset the computer. I have to press the on/off switch on the computer to reboot. This will happen while I am logged onto the internet, page will freeze that I am on, or while working on a Linux program, such as Libraoffice or digikam etc. so it seems to be OS related and not in the browser or software. I need to keep this from happening, I upgraded from LM12, where I didn't have any issues like this. :(

Well first thing, welcome to the Forum. Second, I think most of the users here can help you but I think it would be really helpful if you provided the following:

Hardware: Specifically, Video card, CPU, Memory
Software: Version of LM 14 - Cinnamon, Mate
32bit or 64bit
Version of Video drivers
Updates installed?

Others may have more specific questions but I feel this is a good place to start.

Thank you for the welcome, herbie643.
Hardware - Pentium Dual Core(R) E5200 @ 2.5Ghz
OS version - Linuxmint14 Nadia - Mate 32bit ( I believe the computer supors 64bit) the choice of 32bit was by choice.
Display - OpenGL Renderer Mesa DRI Intel(R) G33 x86/MMX/SSE2
Multimedia Audio Adapter - HDA-Intel - HDA-Intel

updates were installed upon installing OS.

Hope this helps some.

I had a laptop that would freeze as well.. Would run for a time. maybe 1hr or less, then freeze. Had to reset machine and it would be fine for a bit. Finally bought another laptop. When I moved the old laptop I noticed that it was filthy on the bottom. The fan area was almost completely blocked. Perhaps you have a heat issue. Maybe you could install some applet for sensors or a screenlet and see what the temp's are for your cpu.
Just a thought. I am on LM14 64bit and have had 0 problems.

One other problem, though maybe a bit of a stretch, memory chip(s).

The issues began immediately after I upgraded from LM12 to LM14, there wasn't any issues but I don't want to go back to that version if I can help it.

You could have a look in your log files. After a crash look either at the end of logs or check the date/time. I would try something like this:

Code: Select all

less /var/log/dmesg.0
less /var/log/syslog
less /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old
less ~/.xsession-errors
(You can use PageUp, PageDown and the arrow keys to navigate. Q to quit.)

There are nothing more then that in the dmesg log?

Please put it in CODE tags for easier reading if there's a lot of text (mark it and press the Code button above the text field) :D

Partially solved
Sometimes my mintbox freeze but not so often (four times in a week) after i've installed nvidia drivers

I had a freeze problem on a desktop recently, found it would would happen at night when a VM was running its nightly cron job, later also at other times when it was heavily loaded. *After* I ordered a new box I decided to open it and saw that the heatsink between the CPU and the CPU fan was more that 50% covered with dust. No wonder it was getting a fever  I blew away the dust (it had a burned smell), and now the desktop has been fine.

So, it may not be OS related....

I am still experiencing the problem. It will happen when I am active working with pictures on digiKam, or while browsing the internet, or sometimes while just idle with the computer on. The other symptoms experienced are a complete stopping of the keyboard and mouse. no caps light or any indicators are working, and the mouse stays frozen in place. I have to do a hard boot each time, have tried the alt-ctrl- delet, and alt-ctrl-backspace, as well as the alternate suggested reisub keys with alt-sysrq or ctrl-sysrq and nothing will wake it up from the deep sleep it is in. If any of the developers ever see this maybe some reason could be forthcoming, this is really annoying. I have changed keyboard and mouse and that didn't fix the problem, so I am still looking for my fix. Please help !!

Hi everybody,
Same problem here.

-Computer-
Processor : 2x Genuine Intel(R) CPU U4100 @ 1.30GHz
Memory : 8142MB (656MB used)
Operating System : Linux Mint 14 Nadia
-Display-
Resolution : 1366x768 pixels
OpenGL Renderer : Gallium 0.4 on NVA3
X11 Vendor : The X.Org Foundation

Complete system freeze after about an hour of use. Unrecoverable, mouse cursor freezes, too. Also noticed extreme heat from the processor: 49.00°C.

I'm positive this is not a dust problem or otherwise a hardware issue.

EDIT: based on some Googling, I installed the NVidia drivers. Hopefully this solves the problem. If it doesn't, I'll be back here whining. :)

Add me to the list. Just installed Mint 14 Mate on a 4th computer which was bought new recently, removing WinXP which was working fine, with a Xeon 3.6GHz CPU, and also am experiencing the mouse freezing randomly. Thinking it may be a mouse problem I tried using a wireless USB mouse and also experienced the same problem when the keyboard quit responding while I was typing and the mouse no longer worked.

now running Nadia, and every so often it just freezes.
seems to be when I have been using a browser for some time...or maybe not??

I am running this on a laptop - is that the problem?

and how do I find out?

Ta...so does this mean I need to go back to 13?
It would be a shame but not a problem...is that the best solution?
Is 13 stable in this regard?
Ta again

from what i can gather, nobody has a solution to this and ubuntu 12 is hideously broken, will continue being so, and this guy who has taken over has essentially fscked it up for all time, and its time to move on to something else.
