User settings being reset every reboot [SOLVED]

Postby zax on Sat Jan 19, 2013 6:48 pm

Hi everyone,

Firstly, I am a linux newbie and I am not a native english speaker, so sorry for any dumb questions or bad english.

So, here is the problem of mine:
I have installed Linux Mint 14 XFCE 32-bit on my laptop where I already had Win 7 Pro installed - I chose to install it on the same partition, no formatting. Installation went absolutely with no problems and in few minutes I booted into Linux Mint. Thought it was great, started to customize it (install apps - few of them via software manager like Wine etc. and Chrome using .deb file - and customize the interface slightly).

Then rebooted and - everything was gone - I mean, I booted into Mint with no difficulties, but all my apps and settings were gone. Tried reinstalling, again the same problem.

I have no idea what to do here. I tried to create a different user, but users were reset as well :) I don't want to format (too much time for currently low outcome), and I still think I need Windows for work, which means I am limited to installation to current partition together with Win7.

I have installed Mint using flash drive (created from image using unetbootin).

My laptop is rather old, Intel Core 2 Duo T5300 1,73 GHz, 2GB RAM, only 120GB HDD (but I have about 45GBs free), Windows 7 Professional installed.

Additional information on why I wanted Mint 14 XFCE: My reasons to try Linux and to choose Mint XFCE version were quite simple - I wanted to try a Linux distribution for quite some time and my machine is, as mentioned above, rather old and slow, so I have decided I might try some lightweight distribution to gain a little boost maybe. As a result of speaking with friends and searching the forums I came to the conclusion that Mint 14 XFCE might be most suitable for me. What I wanted to say is that I am open for hints and mainly that the solution does not strictly have to be solved within Mint 14 XFCE...

Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Hello, zax.

You have started a Mint4win installation of Linux Mint 14 xfce. Fine.
You have successfully performed the first part of this installation. It runs inside Windows and serves only to prepare the second part of the installation.
This second part is the real Linux Mint installation. When you boot into Mint 14, what you see is a live system. The live system itself is read-only. All changes will be lost after a reboot, as you have found yourself.
On the desktop of this live system there should be a a DVD icon having the label "Install Linux Mint".
Click this icon. This will launch the second part of the installation which will give you the fully functional Linux Mint14 xfce system.

If you need help on how to perform the second part of the Linux Mint 14 installation, please, follow >> the advice given in this post <<.

Kind regards,
Karl
