I did a search on the internet and the most reason's for this problem i could find is: the file is too large, it is a sparse file (a file with holes, data that has not been filled so when copying it stumbles over those holes), the .avi file is broken (likewise as a sparse file)...
But it is not an unknown issue on this forum: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=65356
